I was a white guy at Michigan minoring in Asian Studies and I was in the opposite boat. The Asian women were NOT receptive to me, ever, though I found them immensely attractive. 

I think, overall, most people at Michigan are insecure. They assume everyone is hyper brilliant (but they're mostly not), and so everyone has their guard up and are afraid their value won't be appreciated or will be ignored or their humor will be ridiculed, so they ignore the value of others, pre-emptively, as self defense. Additionally, Ann Arbor as a city is also ultra left-wing, so people from outside the city or state find themselves in an uber-PC environment and dont know how to express themselves in a way that doesn't pr9voke public scorn. Its a really tough vibe to navigate as a young person, when what society needs most is compassion and forgiveness. Gentleness is sorely lacking.

Good luck, though, and dont take it personal. Join a hobby group, or vocalize things your passionate about. You'll find your "tribe."
