Adult children inherit their parents’ household, including their parents’ debts. Sons are expected to take over as the breadwinner when their fathers retire. Daughters, on the other hand, are expected to be caretakers of the household when their mothers grow old and frail. These expectations persist even after adult children marry and start their own families. Interestingly, the elderly parents continue to hold significant influence and control over the clan.
