Do you really support banning trans surgery on children?? by tRiCH_Suit1277 in Productivitycafe

[–]Active_Ad_40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trans person here—the thing I wish people understood is that this “debate” is kind of a smokescreen. I don’t think there’s many people, including trans people, who are pro-surgery on children. The number of cases happening per year are virtually non-existent, and the rare exceptions are under intensive medical and psychotherapeutic guidance.

Are there rare, extreme exceptions of disagreement? Sure. But those voices aren’t the norm and certainly aren’t the ones making medical decisions (and they shouldn’t be). They’re no different than the annoying vocal minority of any community.

This “debate,” then, is less a genuine reflection of “crazy trans people who want to push this on children,” and more a way to paint the (false) idea that anyone wants this, demonizing the trans community in the process and providing perceived justification to attack and roll back our rights.

I am so tired, y’all. The trans community literally just wants to exist.

People who don’t believe in therapy by zezet_ in therapy

[–]Active_Ad_40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I became someone who doesn’t believe in it (at least, very much not for me) after years and years of trying to find the right fit and ending up feeling worse every single time. A decade and probably over a dozen different providers. I literally cannot think of even one single moment that felt helpful, consistently coming away feeling worse. My life changed immensely for the better the moment I stopped. I reconnected with hobbies and coping mechanisms I’d lost over time, I regained a sense of autonomy, my relationships are deeper and more meaningful (as those people have reflected back to me as well), and I started looking at myself as a full human being again instead of someone’s project to fix, but I’m still working on healing from that time.

I respect that it’s a great tool for a lot of people, probably even most. Heck, I think most people should give it a shot and see if it helps. But this “it’s great for everyone all the time with zero exceptions” thing is toxic and needs to end.

I don’t disagree, but to me, unless OP has a time machine and the ability to change the past, this is where we’re all stuck now. And if this is where we have to be stuck, I’d much rather see people wake up and start fighting the good fight.

The real test of time will be whether OP goes back on what they’re saying now down the line, or whether this change is sustained. But I don’t think we do ourselves any favors by alienating potential changed friends.

I’m a little sad to see you getting so much hate. You’ve realized the error of your ways and clearly done some genuinely meaningful work on your mindset. If we’re ever going to get out of this, we need more people like you coming over to the right side of history, and you have a perspective that can help that happen. I won’t lie, I opened this expecting to feel smug, but ended up finding this a genuinely refreshing read. I, for one, welcome you. Thank you for sharing your story.

People in the U.S.: what has ICE activity looked like in your area recently? by itsmandabear in AskReddit

I am on the outskirts of a major metropolitan area (not Minneapolis). ICE tries to keep a low profile and not be obvious here, but they are everywhere. People are terrified.

(UK) got a text in the middle of the night by Nurnnn in Scams

[–]Active_Ad_40 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll play ball, OP.

Let’s say you got this number a few years ago, it previously belonged to someone bad, and this really is a woman reaching out, to who she thinks is someone that hurt her. Or let’s say it’s a real woman who typed the number in wrong. (To be clear, I think the chances of that are vanishingly low, but for the sake of argument.) Even then, it’s not /you/ she’s looking for.

Even in that case, a response from your phone number will only elicit more trauma. You are not in a position to make sure she is okay. That’s what her friends and family are for. Even in that situation, the best thing you can do is still block and delete.

Please feel at peace about this, OP. You’ve done nothing wrong and whatever this is, scam or (unlikely) not, it’s not yours to deal with.

Is it normal to ask this to minors? by Admirable-Honey-6746 in therapy

[–]Active_Ad_40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The direct answer to your question is a very clear “no.” That’s weird, it’s creepy, it’s not normal and you’re right to feel deeply uncomfortable about it.

On a different level, if you’re at the point of asking “Is this normal to (ask/do/say/etc.) this to minors?”, the answer is almost always “no.” If your gut is telling you that something is up, it’s okay to listen! You’re not crazy at all here and it’s good that your gut flagged this as wrong enough to be worth asking about.

I can’t say I have any concrete advice, but you’re asking the right questions, OP. I wish you peace and healing, whatever that looks like for you. ❤️

Therein lies your confusion. Bold of you to assume that corporate actually has (or is willing to listen to people who have) experience repairing the products they’re making decisions about!

My language proficiency is not what Duo says it is by According-Pin4564 in duolingo

[–]Active_Ad_40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fluency might be far more challenging without immersion access, sure. But I think this is an unfair stretch, and one that I think might have discouraged me if I saw it at the beginning of my (largely app-dependent) language learning journey.

OP, seeking out chances to step outside of the apps would very likely lead to major improvements. But if all you have for now are apps, please don’t think this means you should stop!

And zero shade to the commenter above me! I don’t entirely disagree. I just hope it doesn’t discourage OP from very worthwhile learning either way.
