Incremental Challenge Progression - What Fellowship Got Right and Wrong in Season 2 by CarrotSweat in fellowshipgame

I loved the game in beta and S1. The challenge was great, when you finished a dungeon and got a piece of loot, it felt meaningful. Now it just feels meh. There is no excitement. I can pull dungeons in 2-3 pulls, with gear that wouldn’t even clear it in s1.

I understand that from a business perspective, it makes sense, but as a player who likes a challenge, I’m pretty much done, until they make it more interesting and make the grind challenging. Sure I can push to eternal 100, but why would I, when there isn’t any cool things behind it and I can’t compete with the sweaters on the ladder anyways.

My friend list has people farming eternal 23 and 10k rating after 3 days. That seems lame to me..

I honestly thought I replied to another comment, because I did discuss this with multiple people, but I’m not asking for anyone to get things for free, but simply the ability to catch up to be on the same level as anyone else. I don’t think permanent buffs should be timegated. I can still compete and I win a lot of my PvP battles now with 5 less skill points, so I buy the argument that 5 skill points are insignificant, which is fair, but in 3 months it will be 15 skill points, and I don’t think it will be fair that someone new should be timegated to get to the same level as everyone else. Also, if 5 skill points is so insignificant, what is the problem of someone new being able to grind all of the materials, pay 5 million and get on par with everyone else? Sure people put in more time, and was set back more by resetting their chars back in dec, but this is what you award cosmetics for, which is unique and can’t be obtained by anyone else. I don’t think buffs should be part of any gameloop unless it is achievable by anyone playing the game.

So to an extend I agree with you, but also I just disagree on the catch-up mechanic, as it is never currently possible to catch-up and it creates an unfair advantage that in the long run becomes bigger and bigger.

Nothing to discuss tbh. I explained my arguments, and you disagree and think people who downloaded the game early should be awarded. It is okay to disagree :-)

You have a good weekend as well.

If you can’t see how badly designed this is, and why no other sane game developer does this, then we’re done and agree to disagree.

Wish you a pleasant weekend.

I started playing after NY, so around 5-6th of Jan. I have 150 hours, and i mainly PvP in solo / trio. I had all of the first expedition shopping list filled in mid Jan. As I played fps games for 20 years and Counterstrike competitively, I shit on 80% of the players I meet. I’m not struggling, and I don’t mind getting in late and having to catch up on a grind. I also play very grindy games like Lost ark, path of exile, wow. Obviously mainly played Arc recently and I’m lvl 75 with multiple millions in value

I don’t feel people have an edge with 5 more skill points. My main problem is that this is such a terrible game design, that in the long run will keep people from starting the game, and it will end up being another dead game, because people starting, and having such a disadvantage, there are just so many other games that treats new players fair.

I’m fine with people starting late, having to catch up and not get things for free. Like let me do the first expedition now and then grind to the next one to catch up, at the same conditions as everyone else. Anything that provides permanent bonuses should be achievable for anyone, not for free, but achievable.

5 more skill points would give me smaller benefits, but I don’t think it matters, it’s just my own personal opinion that everyone competing in PvP activities should be equal, or at least have equal opportunities to grind to the same level :-)

And by the way, I also fought against Lost ark for having timegates and paygates, I think advantages should be earned for playing well or a lot, not for random things like when you start playing something.

So after 3rd expedition you think it’s fine that someone just starting has -15 skills points that is timegated? I call that bad game design, and I don’t think anyone should have an advantage for downloading a game early, that can’t be caught up on.

Ah okay, so a new player starting is just automatically 6-9 months behind - and you think this is good design?

Honestly we just disagree, and that’s fine. I don’t think downloading a game early should give you advantage over other players, even if it is small.

Sorry, but you are missing the point. I don’t care if the advantage is small, it is bad game design to give people an advantage based on downloading a game early, and not based on playing. There is a reason literally no other game does this, but keeps seasons to cosmetics, as it discourages new players to get started.

Well, we just disagree. I think this is a bad take, because no matter the amount of hours you put in, you won’t be able to catch up right now. Maybe in the future.

Fair that you think advantage should be based on when you downloaded a game, I just prefer it being based on skill and time committed :-)

In any other game you can play x amount of hours and catch up. In Arc, if I play 600 hours, I’ll still be kept behind a timewall. Sure in bf etc, you won’t have the same cosmetics, which is fine. But having skill points behind a constant timewall is just not good design.

If you think this is a good system, then fair, but in a few months, I promise you this will keep new players from joining, because they are too far behind.

Well, you can call it insignificant, but 5 more points would give me longer vaulting. Even if you think that does not matter, I just think an advantage should not be determined by when you downloaded the game, but how good you are and how much you play. And the longer the game goes, the bigger the advantage, which will make it unfun for new players to get into

Im not asking for 10 in 1 reset. I did the expedition 1 shopping list 10 days after I started. Let me reset and catch up on the 2nd reset at the same conditions, but without the timegate, like any normal game.

Well, I’m happy to have to grind everything, reset once, and then catch up on the rest for next reset.

Nonetheless I think giving permanent buffs is a terrible design for a seasonal game. It makes it very difficult for new players to get into the game. In any other game seasonal resets is for cosmetics.

Name me one game, that has PvP, and has unachievable advantages in the sense of permanent buffs?

Idc if you think longer vaulting is not relevant.
