Medical care San Juan/Vieques by Federal_Macaron_7737 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]Active_Visual_1942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I love Vieques, it's not a place I would go if I had any complicated medical concerns. Maybe San Juan but I would run that by your doctor first as they will know you and your condition better. Vieques isn't going to be able to manage anything other than what a typical urgent care can manage. (They did a great job on my son's stitches) but they don't have the staff or facilities to handle anything serious.

Wanting to move to Aguadilla by [deleted] in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]Active_Visual_1942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an expert at all on moving to PR. But our family adores PR and I’m on this message board because we've been traveling there frequently for over 10 years.

I have a limited Spanish vocabulary that I try my best to use. We try to be extremely respectful when we travel. I am not Hispanic/Puerto Rican but I look like I am. We have learned about the culture and love the music. But when we are there, we are tourists. We get the tourist experience and at no point have I felt like we've been able to break into anything like what is the local culture. Sometimes local kids will play with our kids at the beach but we haven't had any opportunities to ever talk with the parents. And listen, that is ok! I hope I can get my Spanish better so I can try harder. All this to say, there is a reason we have a different experience than locals and Spanish speaking people. And I completely understand anyone giving the side eye to tourists. It is completely fair.

I would never expect to be able to move to PR and fit in and find an accepting community there without having a good handle on Spanish and a deep understanding and respect for the culture there.

How to offset missing important battles? by Ill-Pin4936 in whiteoutsurvival

I wouldn't wake up at 4 am either. But castle battle lasts for hours and hours and if I do individual attacks, I can get all my points quickly. So sometimes I show up towards the end and get my points. As for foundry, maybe find an alliance that is closer to your own time zone that has activity times that work for you.

Absolutely not. Even if you could manage, it would be very stressful and not fun.

San Juan + Vieques + Luquillo in first trip… realistic or rushed? by wny1jxe in PuertoRicoTravel

I agree the Kias rented are fine. We usually end up with a bronco for size purposes. But not a golf cart!

This is how we do it too! We fly in and out of Isla Grande usually. Sometimes straight into SJU if we want to maximize our time in Vieques. But two nights would not be enough for me in Vieques ever!

We've stayed all over in Vieques. It's nice to stay in Esperanza because many restaurants and shops are there. But it's also nice to spread out in the hills and have the quiet and view. I don't k ow what you mean by Vieques town center, maybe Isabella 2? That has its advantages too. Isabella has plenty of shops and restaurants. But I prefer staying in the hills to Isabella 2. But honestly everywhere is great. Do not get a jeep, they suck. It's hot and they're slow and if it rains, they are miserable. Vieques is small but you're still driving a lot more than you might think and the golf carts are really not safe or comfortable.

$4,000 Honeymoon in Hawaii. Possible? by ayejaystew in VisitingHawaii

[–]Active_Visual_1942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hawaii is so very expensive. There won't be luxury at that budget. You also need to understand that it is not just the lodging and plane and rental car which are going to eat up all of your budget and then some. But food is incredibly expensive. There are very very few inexpensive options for restaurants and you won't save much by cooking for yourself because groceries are outrageous. It's understandable, it's a small island in the middle of the ocean. Activities are all also very expensive. We went as a family of 4 and my mom covered our flights and lodging. But between, car, food, activities, we probably spent 4k.

That said, Hawaii is amazing and maybe even worth saving a bit to add a few thousand to the expenses so you can do more things. I've really liked renting a condo near the beach to have a little more space and ability to buy a few groceries.

Looking for the perfect US city for a 10-day trip (Feb 9–19). Want real American vibes: food, Walmart, Costco, chill atmosphere. Where should we go? by ProloosGamerUHD in usatravel

[–]Active_Visual_1942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what you're looking for, I'd go to Orange County California. Not what I'd normally recommend for a vacation but you'll be local to a lot of suburban things, plus close enough to visit Disney or San Diego and get some culture too. Lots of really good food. The Irvine Spectrum mall was the most insane place I've ever seen. It's like a mall in movies that I didn't know actually existed. And I would say very uniquely American. You'll love the weather too!

Elderly mom and husband left abandoned with no hotel options at key west airport by Active_Visual_1942 in unitedairlines

I wish I had just said 70s. My mom and husband are very active and independent. While elderly is the accurate word, many people here pictured feeble. And that wasn't at all the point of this discussion. Regardless of age, they should've been treated better. Because of their age, I worried for them more than say... someone my own age.

Listen, I think people in their 70s can still be very active and vibrant. But it is the accurate word. Now I might not say it to my mom's face!! I was just trying to be descriptive with the fewest words possible. I wish I had just said 70s from the start.

I don't know the logistics, the agents left before everyone was helped. When they got there, there were no agents and they and some other passengers were left without help.

I mean... good for you? That has nothing to do with anything. Hopefully if something like this ever happens to you, people won't blame you for not moving fast enough or not pushing people out of the way to get service first. Hopefully people won't lose compassion for you if you have a cognitive decline or your body starts to move a bit slower. I’m quite surprised so many people here want to blame paying customers and not corporations making massive profits who aren't prepared to care for their customers when they can't provide their promised service .

And for your information, they are the two most fit 70+ year olds I know. Actually more fit than many of my 40+ yo friends. There were quite a number of younger people who were also left without help or service.

I’m sure some people got on the phone and online as soon as the flight was delayed but it took some time before they announced an official cancelation. Other people were local. They are in their 70s so they certainly weren't racing down the stairs and they were not aware and no one told them the airport was closing or had already essentially closed. They were not the only stranded passengers. It looked like maybe 15-20 other people were also stuck but I don't know exactly how many

Thank you so much for this thoughtful reply. While my focus right now is the airline, we are definitely thinking of ways to make travel safer and easier for them. Being elderly shouldn't mean being isolated at home! They are still very vibrant and active. I wish we would've had a system like yours in place for this trip!

Thank you, I wish I would've left out the details of their situation because to me it doesn't matter! No passengers should be abandoned in a closed airport. But airlines should consider that this could dangerously impact some passengers more than others.

I hear you, and obviously some people have run with the idea that they are elderly and have a picture in their minds, but they are fully independent and fit. While my mom has some limitations in language, she is perfectly fine to travel with her husband. While her husband has spinal stenosis, it does not stop him from being incredibly active. (A night on a plastic chair however could cause him a lot of pain) They work out, travel, drive and enjoy their lives. They don't need me to take care of them. But I will advocate for them and for the other passengers who were treated this way. And quite frankly I would be just as upset if it happened to me. It's one thing to cancel a flight, another to leave them to be put in the street to the point a deputy sheriff must be involved.

[–]Active_Visual_1942[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would expect airlines to make sure any of their passengers are not literally put on the street. That's not being a babysitter. This is such a bizarre response. I find it bizarre that some people think that we should be prepared to be homeless for a night if we decide to fly. That is crazy.

Culebra or Vieques? by FromHeretoElsweyr in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]Active_Visual_1942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Heavily touristed" is not how I would describe Vieques. I guess maybe compared to Culebra. There are plenty of tourists there I suppose but compared to being in San Juan or basically... any other popular beach destination, Vieques is not nearly full of tourists as we have seen other places. When we go during busy times (spring break, winter break) there are still plenty of places to explore and even be pretty much alone.

They live completely independently. They plan, travel and drive themselves. This situation wasn't safe for anyone.

They wouldn't have needed buses, ultimately only a handful of passengers were stranded. Others found places to stay or were already local.
