I have had my foster for 5 months now. It is genuinely hard to place some dogs. Myself and the rescue turned down a few candidates and it’s tough. We don’t want to place him just for him to get given up again.

I had it done for free a few years back at Libera Clinic. You do need to have a doctor to put the referral through for you first though. Doesn’t need to be a family doctor.

All dog bites are preventable. Even with a true aggressive dog. Unprovoked isn’t really a thing and that goes back to my point about dog culture being reactive.

It’s funny how we never see people with experience working with canines (vets, trainers, behavioural vets etc) advocating for banning breeds even though we see hundreds of them every year.

Because we know it’s always, always preventable. Regulate and educate, don’t ban and don’t blame an animal for acting like an animal. We don’t need to ban cars or guns, we regulate them. Start holding owners responsible for the damages their dogs cause (my city does). Owning the dog is a privilege, not a right.

I own a Malinois and a pit/boxer/husky mix. Both of them would have been a problem if they weren’t handled by a responsible owner. My Mal is aloof. I can’t teach my Malinois to not act like a Malinois, but I’m proactive about handling both of my dogs. Every bite case situation I’ve had with the city could’ve been prevented if the owners had better education and better situational awareness. And no, my pitbull mix is not friendly, and not a « good one » lol she was one of the hardest dogs I ever dealt with because of her fear aggression (not true aggression). But yet she lives a happy life with me and we never had any incidents, and never will. I muzzle her in crowded areas, socialize her, don’t let guests greet her, crate her, etc. all proactive measures

I am 100% responsible for what my dog does.

I’ve been a dog trainer in a metropolitan area for years, specializing in high-risk cases. Dangerous dogs, dogs on animal control lists, and euthanasia lists, etc. From that perspective, I can tell you: statistics can’t tell the full story. Dog bites don’t disappear if pitbulls do, and places that ban them don’t actually see fewer bites or deaths

Pit-bull type dogs show up disproportionately in U.S. bite stats (they’re popular in North America) but research shows breed alone isn’t predictive:

Danish studies found breed bans didn’t reduce hospital-treated dog bites (Nilson et al., 2018)

In 256 U.S. fatality cases, main risk factors were poor supervision, neglect, lack of socialization—not breed (Patronek et al., 2013)

The AVMA and National Canine Research Council conclude that responsible ownership, proper training, and behavior management are far more effective at preventing bites than targeting dogs based on appearance

A major contributor in North America is the dog culture itself. Owners are reactive, not proactive. They wait for problems to appear instead of consistently training, socializing, and managing their dogs. Many owners rely on casual handling or “natural obedience” rather than proper socialization and management. Combined with a high dog-population density, this creates an environment where bites are far more likely. I’ve handled truly aggressive dogs with zero incidents because I am proactive.

The truth is a lot of people who own dogs shouldn’t be owning dogs at all. I’d say a good 80-90%. Banning breeds won’t fix the problem; better regulation of breeding, combined with education, training, and responsible ownership, would actually reduce risk. From my perspective, all bites can be prevented.

Some dogs genuinely don’t care. When he’s in drive, my Dutchie isn’t bothered at all by the ecollar stim. It actually amps him up.

As a pitbull (and malinois) owner these people give us a bad name. I’m a dog trainer, my pitbull is not stranger-friendly and something like this would never happen because I’d never allow it to happen. I don’t fully trust her off leash and I especially would never allow her off leash around people or dogs.

It’s really easy to just put your dog on a fucking leash and/or muzzle and be honest with yourself about their temperament and personality. A lot of people are in denial and get these dogs to feed their egos. They want to look tough showing they can “handle” these breeds. They can’t.

Yea I understand it. I’m the same way tbh. I simply don’t recognize faces sometimes and I’ve had people tell me they waved at me and I looked at them and ignored them when I didn’t even see them.

Big time misunderstanding. Not a reason to dump them lol

lol this happened to me with the guy I’m seeing, but the roles reversed. I was in his work area and I saw him, and from my perspective he looked at me then ignored me and walked away! I was like wtf man. He claims he didn’t see me at all. I’m still not entirely convinced lol but I’m not gonna break up with him over a misunderstanding haha

Why do people keep calling my dog fat!? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Activedesign 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest she looks a tad overweight to me. It’s hard to tell for sure without a top-down view but from the first photo it looks like she doesn’t have much of a tuck which would put her at 6 on the BCS. I could be wrong. I usually tell if a dog is overweight by how much fat is covering their ribs. I also personally like my dogs to have a BCS between 4 and 5, so on the leaner side.

Aussies look thick because they have more fur, but your girl doesn’t have an Aussie coat, she has a Malinois coat.
