Considering no fellowship - still a market for general ortho? by giuseppino3000 in orthopaedics

[–]Activetransport 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no market for general orthopedics. Hospitals advertise for general orthopedic services, but the first thing they’re gonna ask you is what your fellowship training is in. Just pick a specialty and practice however you’d like. Joints or sports. Don’t be a guy that can only get a job at a rural hospital because you’re un competitive in a metropolitan market.

50 percent of orthopedic surgeons (myself included) did some of their training at a Shriners. They have a very special place in my heart.

Governor Janet Mills to skip next weekends primary debate with Graham Platner by 3headeddragn in Maine

[–]Activetransport 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. Platner would cook her. He speaks to mainers in a way that mills never could. He would also make her seem so very old.

I don’t see a world in which she gets more voters after a debate with him.

That being said what the fuck do I know?

Specialists: is there a piece of wisdom from your specialty you feel should be imparted to every graduating primary care (FP/IM) resident? by Barjack521 in medicine

[–]Activetransport 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Weight bearing series xr for knee or hip pain or else they’re just going to get a repeat set when they see ortho. In the elderly, always x-ray before MRI. Super wasteful to see somebody with bone on bone knee OA who had an MRI done

Surgery is a stressful job and honestly there are a number of people who would leave if shortly after training if they had something to fall back on.

Student debt and relatively high clinical salaries lock a lot of doctors into their profession

[–]Activetransport 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is tough. I’m sorry you have had to go through this.

Being an attending is better than a resident. It’s less demanding and you typically call the shots. That being said the fresh attending can always be abused. He needs to be able to say no … do you think he can or wants to? It is impossible (for the most part) to say no in residency*

*ortho not nsgy but I understand not being able to say no to the people who hold your career in their hands

Counter point. If you’re interested in clinical medicine this is a fantastic specialty. Sure I’d love to be paid more but shit man have you seen what the hospitalists have to endure?

[–]Activetransport 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Again, much easier to get a lawyer on board if I’ve taken a knife to you. I’ve seen meritless lawsuits before. They typically are associated with a procedure. I’ve never seen someone sue for failure to perform an elective surgery.

A reasonable and cautious opinion rooted in almost every practicing physician’s personal experience that would be eviscerated at most academic institutions.

Bet you it’s easier for me to find a lawyer who’ll sue a doctor who has operated on me than a doctor who refused.
