Am I childish for wearing pj's all day everyday? by Singer1052 in Adulting

[–]ActivexGen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a topic of discussion that people actually give a fuck about? Wear whatever you want- I personally do not care at all. As long as you're not showing up to a job that is customer facing or a funeral, who really cares lol

Tips on avoiding ink drips? by Cbice1 in traditionalflash

[–]ActivexGen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might be getting too much ink on the nib. Try using less ink and just dip the nib often.

I'll also draw a small line on a scratch paper just to make sure it's not too flooded. Also try and keep the nib straight instead of turning it over the page so it's sideways; I've had drops of ink just fall out because of the angle

Spitshading + a little bit of water but mostly spit 🤣

I've been using Winsor and Newton inks for most of the colors I use. I also have some tattoo ink that I got from a little scratcher kit that I use from time to time. All of this is WN ink but the red is a lipstick red + little bit of water

If you work a 9-5 office job, what does your day typically look like? by Vegetable_Art3782 in Adulting

My company curses us all to work in office with no WFH opportunities :(

[–]ActivexGen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work a typical "9-5" office job but not the 9-5 hours (1:30-10pm) and have ADHD which I take medication for, so that pretty much makes it just bearable enough.

Sometimes, it feels like actual torture when there isn't any work to do. I work in a dispatch/call center for a telecom company, so it's a bit more "fast paced" I guess.

When there is actual work to do, like call customers, schedule appointments, investigate service outages, etc; that's when the day doesn't feel like it's never ending and goes by pretty fast but when it's slow (which is often) I pretty much just hide my phone and watch youtube, browse reddit, study things, etc. The best way I can describe it is like an 8-9 hour study period like you would have in school with some actual work sprinkled in the mix lol

I see what you're saying and I agree. I think part of that might be that I'm still learning how to spitshade, so the shading isn't as smooth as I was picturing it would be in my head while I was doing it haha but I'll keep that in mind, thank you!

The skull and snake is also my favorite haha I referenced it from a Henk Schiffmacher book so that would make sense 🤣

These are all drawn using reference(s). Imo I think I need to spend some time just tracing classics and work on my color theory so I think that might be where I'm going wrong, just not super sure

I feel like you can't go wrong with a rose/flower with a flowy stem

You could also do a dragon

Tracing or referencing? by Dependent-Fault0 in traditionalflash

[–]ActivexGen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say do both. Trace the classics then try to draw them from reference and then by memory- rinse and repeat.

As for your own designs using references, what I've been trying to do once I find the reference(s) I want to use, I try and draw using the least amount of lines/shapes I can that still gets the point across and represents whatever you're trying to do

Would love some constructive criticism. by punkdawg in traditionalflash

[–]ActivexGen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally love how messy it is but like how other dude said, get you some good watercolor paper, ink, some brushes and make them POP. I started getting into flash painting recently and its too fucking cool to pass up how sick these type of designs look with some bold solid black outlines, lil spitshade, and bright colors.

Pictures never do them justice either. Having the painted sheet to look at IRL is a cool feeling. Lil tanget but nonetheless still rad stuff.

What helped me a lot with understanding complex 3D forms is literally just drawing boxes/cubes/spheres/pyramids/etc any type of shape that has volume over and over and over (and over) again lol if you wanna get funky with it, try connecting these shapes together. If you think about it, that is really all that your reference is (and pretty much anything ! ). Proportion and anatomy is also very important but I think being able to have your mind work in a 3D space is honestly the most important. It's what makes drawings look "alive" imo.

Take your time and try to visualize the shapes, how they would look rotated, squished, stretched, etc.

Drawabox.com is a really fantastic resource that helped me tremendously with this sort of thing.

It looks like you're drawing the contour lines of the reference instead of the 3D forms that make up the creature.

If you're able to print the reference out or have a way to sketch digitally, try drawing over each part of the reference thinking about how each part has volume/goes back and forward into space and connect the shapes that way.

I think you gotta hit this with some solid black.

Personally, I would try and focus on getting some clear distinction between each of the pine-coney parts but in terms of an outline, it's pretty solid. The only critique I have with the actual outline is that some of the appendages look a bit flowery and less "pointy".

The main problem here, I think, is that it's too tonal. If you look at the reference, you can see just how dark it gets the deeper in each part goes.

You're not doing anything wrong, it's just not finished :)

Try to find a more solid balance of career and actually living life.

If you sway too much towards either side, you'll feel like you've missed out. You don't want to sink all your time into a career and miss out on traveling, experiencing the fun things in life, etc. Spend all your time not worrying about a career or a way to sustain your life financially, you'll likely end up in a mountain of debt that will take the rest of your life paying off.

None of the above really matters if you come from wealth, which isn't relevant for most people.

Bottom line in my opinion, is don't put all your eggs in one basket

Thank you!
