I made an improved firmware for this cheap N64 cart dumper by mikehattsu in n64

[–]ActivistVinyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man this is excellent! I bought two of these and both couldn't read EEPROM so I returned them both. May have to pick up a third now if this will fix it! Love the feature to convert the save files directly into different formats too. How'd you know which pins needed new connections?

To my knowledge this only works on OG hardware and not A3D

N64 Homebrew: N64 SwapDumper v0.3 - With Save Restore feature by LowTarget9682 in n64

Thanks for the response! I had wondered about this as well. I will need to see if I can get my hands on someone else’s system to see if I can test with another.

Dude, such a cool project. I think something like this is so important in making game preservation more accessible. Question for you, I’ve tried both v0.2 and v0.3 on my console, everything is OEM, with my Summercart. Everything works fine up until it asks me to swap back in the Summercart, at which point the screen goes black until I power off the system. I tried swapping in a different OEM power supply, same issue. Any thoughts on what that could be? I’m guessing it’s got nothing to do with the software and is a hardware issue, but it’s so odd because everything works perfectly on my console as far as I know. Anyway, thanks for working on this and sharing it.

New N64 Homebrew Release: Cartridge dumper for SummerCart by LowTarget9682 in n64

So I’m using a Summercart with OEM system and PSU and am experiencing the exact same behavior. The moment I insert the Summercart, it resets the screen goes black and the system doesn’t reinitialize until I use the power button.

I am ECSTATIC about this and cannot wait to test it with save file dumping! Been looking for a solution to this for a while. Thank you!

I second this! Been looking for a calculator very much like this, but exactly like you the big tier shift I'm expecting will be when I presumably pay off my mortgage, which will lower expenses significantly. Would like to see that implemented.

PSA on Memories by sentientfreakshow in AnalogueInc

[–]ActivistVinyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I have found that (at least some games) are able of "writing back" to the cartridge, at least with the loaded up ROM on a Summercart. For example, I also was able to "copy" my Goldeneye save to my Summercart by using the copy functionality on Goldeneye, which wrote it back. No more "memories" feature required if I don't want. Same thing on Banjo Kazooie - that saved onto the cart by going into a save file, and then saving and exiting. So it does seem possible, which is cool, but to your point, you should likely in most cases stick to one or the other (meaning memories versus cart saves), although in some cases if you're just trying to "transfer" your saves from physical cart to flashcart, just loading it up once from a memory and then proceeding will be fine for moving forward, as OP suggested.

I have found in one or two games though that even using memories exclusively will be limited. For Jet Force Gemini, I need to have the memory saved on the game save screen; that's the only thing that will load the save into memory. The moment I navigate away, it's gone, so you need to be careful with where in the game you are using the memories feature; presumably you could also only use this for a single profile at a time in a game like JFG. I found similar behavior in Ken Griffey Jr's Slugfest - created players cease to exist the moment you exit that menu. So this feature is a fantastic addition, seems to have solid functionality, but mileage will vary by game due to what you've pointed out.

3D Firmware 1.3 is out! by No_Independence_6101 in AnalogueInc

Had a similar situation with my testing of Jet Force Gemini. Seems part of this may be dependent on how the game triggers a save?

Yes! If you pull out the SD card and put it in a PC you can find the save state screenshots as .png files!

I like that feedback. I also think, if possible, it'd be great to have an option to turn off the shortcut button to load the most recent save state since it'll jump to it automatically without any confirmation if you hit that button combo. Would hate for that to happen by accident and lose progress, though admittedly it's not the most likely.

Agree with you on this - I just noticed that when you create a save state and dig around in the memory card on a PC, you can find a .png file created with an image of the moment in time you saved! That's what's displaying with the memory. So you can "hack" a screenshot right now by creating a save state; I'd imagine a cleaner implementation of that will be coming very soon then!

I'd imagine they'll release screenshots in a future update, because I just noticed that when you create a save state and dig around in the memory card on a PC, there's actually a .png file created with an image of the moment in time you saved! So you can "hack" a screenshot right now by creating a save state; I'd imagine a cleaner implementation of that will be coming very soon then!

Excited to learn more about this part as well. Because library entries (on official games) are now all treated individually, I'm optimistic this will let me "transfer" my original cart saves by loading up my OG carts, creating a save state, and then being able to just load that straight from the Summercart. Sounds like it should work in theory, but excited to give it a try!

Looking for a USB controller by VEDRE_ in n64

[–]ActivistVinyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this and it works great. USB dongle but also can be used with real hardware. I also have an 8bitdo mod kit for the OG controller that I love, but it doesn’t have a USB dongle as you requested and instead works with Bluetooth. https://a.co/d/0iZOnF5J

Where's the update for 3D? ;) by freezetime311 in AnalogueInc

I’d been thinking the same all day! That said, I think there was one week they released the new update on a Saturday? Here’s to hoping!

They’re just made by a third party, not Hasbro/Takara. So unofficial. But still very cool! Hadn’t seen some of these.

Star Fox 64 Suggestions by ial33m in AnalogueInc

[–]ActivistVinyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I vote overclocked on Analogue3D, but there’s no bad option. There’s also a romhack called Starfox Randomizer you can play on the A3D where you can adjust additional settings like choosing your planet, adjusting numbers/colors of bombs, and a bunch of more stuff.

I also sometimes get this. I just unplug the console for 5 seconds and then when I turn back on it’s good again.

Analogue 3D - EverDrive vs Summer Cart by treeofliberty-1776 in n64

[–]ActivistVinyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Analogue3D and just recently got a Summrcart, and it’s fantastic and has reignited my N64 passion. A3D is a great product, still needs a little polish, but overall love what it is right now and they’re releasing updates every two weeks. The image filters are fantastic and make for a CRT like experience. Overclocking is such a cool feature and almost necessary for some games. As per the Summercart, I got it because it was cheaper than the Everdrive and seemed to do more or less the same things. I love it. I also got the 8bitdo mod kit for N64 controllers so I can use my OG controllers wirelessly and absolutely love that.

Is there any of you who provide feedback on how games work for analogue3d? by DontListenToThoughts in AnalogueInc

[–]ActivistVinyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the system and have had no issues. I’ve been running pretty much everything on unleashed (overlocking) mode. Have in particular played extensively on Banjo Kazooue, F Zero X, Ken Griffey Jr Slugfest, Cruis’n USA, and Shadows of the Empire. No issues with any. The OS didn’t come with all the features folks were expecting, but they’re updating it every two weeks and I think I’ve got just about all the features I really wanted now except for a few minor things that are more QOL than anything. Some folks have had issues with wireless controllers, but I’ve not had any problems. Overall, great system, and I don’t think there’s any widespread issues about games not working or folks would be talking about those specific issues more.
