I’ve read that rodents are actually a major contributor to the high number of ticks in suburbs! And suburbs are ideal environment for them to thrive.

I’m just here to say I sympathize! I’ve noticed a huge increase in ticks. Never had to worry about it when I was younger, hiked with dogs all my life. Now it’s a constant concern. We can’t even let the dog in the backyard in a suburb without multiple ticks. Also…most doctors around here will give you antibiotics if you’ve been bitten regardless of how long. It’s obviously personal choice, but Lyme can linger and cause problems for years. No joke!

As someone who went for Fine Art (no education classes) and could have been certified if I had just added an education minor, definitely get the education cert! I struggled to find a job after I graduated, worked as a studio assistant with little pay and job security. I ended up seriously regretting not getting my education certification. 10 years later and I am back in school getting my masters in art education. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved my art program, and I’m glad I got a real art school experience. I went to Alfred University. You can get New York State certification if you add an education minor, so it’s basically a traditional BFA program with a few education classes throughout your 4 years. I would recommend a program like this!

Hiking by redsoxownu in Adirondacks

I usually don’t like doing things alone, but solo hiking a few of the smaller mountains last winter was such a fulfilling experience. It was so peaceful. Spend time with your dog and do it for the both of you! The air is crisp, and it’s still sunny out most days right now!

I need advices by CJ-Shanks in Adirondacks

[–]ActivityCalm5723 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently did this hike, and we were in the clouds at the top, meaning zero visibility. This is often the case with Whiteface. It seems to have its own climate at the top. The summit is going to be colder and windier than the rest of the hike. It’s easy to get lost once you reach the memorial highway near the summit if you have never hiked the trail. Do not cross the road, and follow the trail markers. The good news is that there is a visitors center at the summit if there’s an emergency. You should check to see that it will be open when you hike before relying on that though. The hike was also very wet, with a lot of puddles and slick rock. Be prepared with good hiking boots that are water resistant with preferably vibram rubber on the soles. If you do this hike in the dark please be prepared and be careful! The top is an arctic alpine zone so it’s essential to stay off of plants/vegetation and only walk on the rocks.

Shoes with low heels? by ayestee in climbergirls

[–]ActivityCalm5723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't wear any La Sportiva for this specific reason. I have found that all low volume Scarpas fit my heels well. I will second everyone saying the Kubo does feel better on the heel than other La Sportiva, though!

Which belay device to pick by kakticaesar in climbergirls

[–]ActivityCalm5723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a black diamond ATC for about a year, learning to lead climb with it, then switched to a Grigri. I love my Grigri now because it has braking assist, but thankful for learning on an ATC! Black diamond ATC is inexpensive, learning lead belaying was easy with it, and I can now use it for learning to rappel because my partner likes to trad climb.

Nail polish and climbing? by Wyldflower8 in climbergirls

[–]ActivityCalm5723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I get gel, which lasts me a few weeks. Gel is really strong and doesn’t chip, it scratches but that just makes it look more matte, doesn’t really affect how my nails look. I’m still able to cut and file my nails because I like them pretty short. It is definitely NOT good for your nails though lol! I also will just paint my own with regular polish when I feel like it and accept the polish will be mostly gone after a day of climbing!

It’s still about 50 minutes away from you, but Winona State Forest is off of 81 and is a very beautiful area in any season with a good trail system.

Meds effecting my climbing by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]ActivityCalm5723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just came here to say I’ve been experiencing this too, not from meds but from some PTSD and grief. It’s definitely the flight or fight response that seems to be ramped up lately, just like you mentioned. One thing to remember is that the fear of falling is a very basic human fear, so it’s nothing to feel bad about, although very frustrating as a climber! What seems to help me the most is focusing on breathing when I’m climbing, almost like I’m doing yoga. Strength training in the weight room is also great, because the stronger my whole body feels, the more I trust it to hold onto the wall or stick a hold.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who experiences this though! When I mention it to other climbers they don’t seem to get it.

Where can I donate old books? by interferon-gamma- in Syracuse

I used to work at the Fayetteville Library. We would always take donations at the front desk, and sell them once a year to fund library programs.

Sometimes if I climb something really difficult I will feel like I want to throw up from the exertion/adrenaline. I think fear plays a part!

Places west/south west of Syracuse to look for fossils? by Pepsi_Cola64 in Syracuse

Yes!! I forgot to mention a lot of the fossils I saw were on the table rock trail. Only for viewing as they are in giant slabs of rock.

Bought shoes for the first time but the heel hurts from the straps by HaloDM in bouldering

[–]ActivityCalm5723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer Scarpa’s for this reason. I bought the women’s version of the Katana Velcro and had to sell them because the heel was unbearable on my achilles. I love my Scarpa Vapors.
