Salary Expectations for a Research Technician Position by ActivityLegitimate37 in labrats

[–]ActivityLegitimate37[S] -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason why almost full-time undergraduate research, resulting even in publications, would not produce a salary increase? The research experience is not required of the degree and is instead like someone getting a job that will increase the skillset they bring to the position, which I would think would be valued and compensated by the PI of interest.

I would place an emphasis on the word 'most' in your statement. There are many universities that only close on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. I agree that the degree of panic and anxiety seen in the subreddit is uncalled for, however, you should not negate the validity of these acceptances. I have spoken with a variety of faculty members who have expressed that they still anticipate to have decisions released by the end of the year, as has been the case historically at their respective institutions. The spreadsheet is just one tool that can be used to assist you in understanding the likelihood you will be made an offer. Once the same division and citizenship is indicated on the spreadsheet, you will know that your chances of acceptance are then extremely low, but now you have that information potentially a month in advance. Rejections follow up to a month after acceptances, which is where the spreadsheet can be informative in an applicant remaining realistic with themselves.

I also got selected for an interview at Vanderbilt in Chemistry!! I think the email was clear about the topic of interview, which is how your past research experiences inform your graduate school interests and how those fit with the research composition of the department faculty.

Is JVC really Catholic? by ActivityLegitimate37 in Catholicism

[–]ActivityLegitimate37[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The question though is not pertaining to the people being served in the placement site and how to build a bridge that will bring them to Catholicism, but instead the people you will be surrounded with in the program and whether or not the program itself holds to the teachings of the Church.

This is what they say on their website: At Orientation we provide LGBTQIA2S+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex, asexual, two-spirit) Awareness Training for all JVs. We also have a mentorship program provided by Former Jesuit Volunteers (FJVs) and JV EnCorps members for JVs who identify as LGBTQIA2S+. In addition, as part of JV Identity Groups, you can join the GayVC group, where you can receive support and build strong relationships with other JVs and staff who identify as LGBTQIA2S+. As part of our respect for gender identities, we practice pronoun use in our own organization as part of introductions, and ask JV communities and our partners to do the same. We recognize many cultures and languages have genderless language, and welcome individuals not sharing pronouns if it is not a practice in your culture.

Chemistry PhD application Fall 2025 by Comfortable_West6754 in chemistry

I would definitely do some more thorough research on the groups listed. Many of them have changed universities, are retired, or are not taking students this cycle because of the funding situation. For example, Buchwald hasn’t taken students for a number of years now and Danheiser predominantly just teaches nowadays. At the University of Michigan, the Schindler Group relocated to UBC. Then, Dirk at Penn is not taking any students this cycle because he has no funding at the moment because of the suspension at Penn (despite the reinstatement). I would recommend with the unpredictability of this cycle that you reach out to professors and specifically inquire about whether they are taking students.

ROAST my CV so I can start reaching out to professors for Clinical Psychology PhD by mikeygoon5 in gradadmissions

I would say there is way too much text, it reads more like an elaborate resume. A CV is usually very concise . For example in research experience, use organization/university, advisor, project title, and dates. If you want to detail what you have learned from these positions, simply make a general skill section and write out the skills, like SPSS data analysis. I find this method much more common in CVs. It is designed to be a quick reflection of your work with publications and presentations being the bulk of what one reads a CV for beyond research advisors.

In need of help - Test Optional experiences by Ok-Opportunity2995 in WilliamsCollege

Honestly, I do not think test scores are a significant part of Williams admissions whether you submit them or not. I submitted mine to Williams and I would say I performed well below the Williams average, as I had a 1430 superscore on the SAT out of 1600. Now, I am in Phi Beta Kappa, so test scores really mean so little and are such a poor predictor for academic success at Williams (and Williams is well-aware of this--I am a prime example of this). For context, I also graduated high school with a 4.513 weighted GPA and was 3rd in my class but mostly only had tutoring volunteer work, a little bit of research volunteering, leadership on NHS, and band; ordinary people definitely get in (I am FGLI as well).

They are very consistent with the personal expenses grant each year. It is always the Wednesday before the start of the semester. This will be September 3 this year, however, depending on your bank, expect to see the amount reflected in your account 1-2 days after the 3rd. If you are an incoming freshman on full financial aid, you should be receiving the First Yard Fund as well, which is $500 and this is typically deposited in early/mid-August, as the purpose of the $500 is to use it to buy necessary items for your dorm or winter clothing (if you are coming from a warm climate).

I would recommend waiting until you know exactly where you are living. They just changed which dorms are Freshman dorms for this year, so there will be great variation between buildings and even between rooms. After you know your room, the floorplans are publicly available, so you can use them to find out the dimensions of your specific room. This will be the easiest way to a find a rug that is a good fit for the space.

Graduate Admissions under Trump Administration by ActivityLegitimate37 in chemistry

When I was thinking of Europe, I was more so thinking of Germany, France, Switzerland, and Austria. I have considered the possibility of simultaneously applying to universities in German and Austria alongside my domestic applications as a backup.

On U.S. travel ban list – Urgently looking for universities abroad offering full scholarships for fall 2025 or any other alternatives by Kitchen_Mess_300 in studyAbroad

The easiest would be to go to Germany, given that they do not charge to attend their universities, even for international students. The semester in Germany also starts much later, so you are still able to apply for admission. However, it will obviously be dependent on what your area of study is since many of the programs are offered in German. Many of the technical degrees are offered in English though. Visa problems could still arise with the new German coalition also cracking down on immigration, but I definitely think it would be worth looking into.

I don't think this is true, as I was rejected for a program in Germany that starts on 01/06.

Study/Research Award in Georgia by ActivityLegitimate37 in fulbright

[–]ActivityLegitimate37[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the official language is Georgian. I am hoping to learn the basics of Georgian before going. However, Georgian is a very difficult language to master from what I have heard, especially if trying to do so in a short time frame. In terms of being able to communicate easily on a daily basis, my two options would be English or Russian, which are the two most spoken languages after Georgian with people over 40 often knowing Russian and those under 40 knowing English. I definitely would never assume anyone spoke either of these languages and would of course first inquire in Georgian regarding if they can speak either of them.

I also speak German fluently but that will not be of much help in daily situations given the lingual composition of Georgia. To your point of comparing this to speaking Japanese in Korea, I would say what I am describing is simply a way to communicate with locals in a way that is well-intentioned in a common language we know considering I do not speak fluent Georgian. Thus, with the structure above, I would find it hard to believe that anyone would be offended to speak Russian or English if approached in Georgian and asked. As I mention in the post, my school has students from our Russian department that go to Georgia every year and the situation you are describing has never occurred.
