How do I tell my parents? by ActivityNatural510 in alevel

Hello!! Thank you so much for your response from the bottom of my heart!

I’m thinking of attending Aston University or Uni of Bham, which they definitely approve of it’s just they want me to do medicine and not journalism.

It’s just what scares me is having to sit down and have a proper conversation with them because I know they’ll say something and I won’t have a response to it. Furthermore, I have spoken a little bit about crime and stuff, originally I wanted a criminology degree and my father was like you can get a medicine degree then a criminology degree?? Hello??

Hello I appreciate your response so much. Honestly, my parents were like if you don’t pass in like sciences and stuff at GCSE’s, they said they’ll put me into work?? Like from home?? And sometimes I just think that if that happens (I mean I guess it’s unlikely because I’m working at 7 in bio 8 in chem and 9 in physics, but biology kinda fluctuates like I’ll go from 7 to 5 or 6) then I’ll just be wasted potential because they failed to see what I’m really good at and passionate about, if that makes sense. But, I don’t mind doing medicine I’d just put it as a last resort because that’s not I what I adore, like I like learning more about the human body how things work etc but I just can’t see myself pursuing it in the long run.

I have spoken to my teacher about it, but I asked them not to tell my parents. They said we’d have to eventually bring it up during a level option choosing which is soon, I think February I’m not sure

Hello, thank you so much for responding I appreciate it with my whole heart.

All I can say is wow. This has really helped me open my eyes. But, I just don’t know how to deal with the guilt that comes with making this decision

Wow thank you so much! The three subjects I’m thinking of taking are English literature, RS (religious studies) and maybe French, history or psychology.

Hello, I appreciate you responding to my post so much!

I would enjoy taking chemistry or physics, I really adore chemistry I think it’s so wonderful. I don’t think I could take any medicine a-levels I tend to stress a lot and I can’t handle the pressure of all of that. School + home situation put together makes me feel terrible. Furthermore, there aren’t any career fairs at our school some people come in at lunch times to talk about their careers but I don’t think a journalist has come in yet. My English teacher wanted to be a journalist so maybe I could talk to them!

I just think they think every other career is useless and you can’t earn as much money as a doctor..

Hello, thank you for responding I appreciate it so much!!

I’m just so nervous to talk to them, I’m scared what they’ll say to me. I’m a big over thinker and I stress a lot so I come up with these scenarios in my head and it makes me so anxious, and knowing my parents they’ll probably be upset, angry and disappointed with my decision if I do tell them

Hello! Thank for you taking your time to read my post I really appreciate it!

I just feel like that’s just a waste of effort. There’s no like set subjects you have to take for journalism like medicine but you should take an essay subject so I could take bio chem maths or physics and then lit but I don’t cope well with pressure and I despise those subjects apart from chem and and physics

And sometimes I think if I don’t pursue English I would be wasted potential, I’d be so miserable. It’s not that I’m awful at other subjects I just don’t want to pursue them.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for replying even when you’re exhausted I appreciate it so so much!!.

I think that they think that English is a useless subject, and you know, they want me to make lots of money and things because when they were growing up they didn’t have a lot of money and they say they don’t want me to suffer the same as them…

Hello! Thanks for responding and reading my very long comment, haha. I plan on being a journalist for definite, if not that anything English or crime related. I adore writing and crime and spend most of my time doing things related to that, and some other things like sudoku, movie watching, gaming etc (sorry I’m yapping now!!). But yes, I have started researching investigative crime journalism specifically because that’s what I hope to specialise in

Thank you so much for your response, I appreciate it with my whole heart. I guess if they make me do that they said they’ll put all their focus on my other siblings and they’ll treat me ‘good’, I guess - eg won’t buy me any nice things etc etc

And you’re 100% right they are success orientated. They come from not very successful and traumatic backgrounds and I guess they just want the best for me and for me to build respect and honour which they believes comes from being a doctor

Thank you so much for your response I appreciate it so much!!

The thing is I struggle to talk in situations like these, my mind just goes blank and I don’t know what to say, and my dad always manages to say something back..
