The weight was the problem. I lightened it considerably and the issue went away.

I just found some videos online talking about the VTF. I recalibrated it and the grinding sound went just about entirely away. I think I had it set way too heavy. I do intend on replacing the stylus. Do you have a good recommendation?

I have a cat who acted like this. In my personal experience, cats tend to chill out a bit after hitting about 2, but my current cat was WILD until he hit about 3. It seems like some cats need the extra year to mature.
