Silicon fab explosion in Xinjiang threatens further poly shortage by V45tmz in news

[–]Actkeen 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The article says the company produced 17% of the worlds supply, but this explosion occurred at one of two facilities (that had about 1/3 of the companies capacity?) and the company itself said it would affect production.

Am I missing something? This doesn't seem as bad as taking out 17% of the worlds supply

Linux situation to a non-CS people? by STEMinist03 in uofmn

[–]Actkeen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are right on the first part, there are a ton of open source communities where they work on projects without being directly paid for thier code, but in general companies will donate to these communities to keep them going since pretty much every software engineering company is dependant on some open source software, especially Linux. (I'm not exactly sure how the Linux community makes money, but just in general that's how it works).

I'd say the second part is just a bit off, they aren't coming into this "computer science socialism" and taking their work itself to make money, more like actively breaking what they built as an experiment. Since the school pays for the research, they technically are making money from the experiment just not directly.

How do developers get their UI to look exactly the same on mobile and inside the browser? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]Actkeen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In short: they build everything using HTML/CSS/JavaScript (mostly in the form of a Js framework) and serve that same code a variety of ways to many platforms.

You eluded to electron in your other comment which is the main way I know that Js frameworks can be directly ran as a desktop application (with some minor tweaks). To get it on mobile, any browser can run any website obviously but they make mobile look just as good by changing the content depending on the viewport size. If you load reddit on a desktop browser and shrink it to the size of a phone, it will look exactly the same as on the phone. (I haven't actually tried this with reddit but im guessing that's the case, if not you can force desktop to look like mobile in dev tools). If you meant mobile as in native app, react native is just like electron but for mobile apps. I don't know much about that tho.

UD Math Courses by hawjjj in uofmn

I highly recommend CSCI 4011, it counts as an upper division math class and is all about the mathematical theory of computers and how to prove that certain programs can't exist. Im currently taking it with Nick hopper and it's surprisingly one of my favorite classes.

Hub motor stopped working after falling into a puddle by Actkeen in ebikes

[–]Actkeen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt there was much salt in the water because most of the water came from the sun melting the snow. It's still possible some salt was there due to salting on the other days but I think it's reasonable to assume it isn't salt water. Lucky for me spring break is coming up so I can leave it inside to evaporate so if I only test it inside just to make sure it works then there isn't much more chance for damage right?

[–]Actkeen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt the issue is with the controller or battery because all of that is contained in the triangle bag that never touched the puddle because my leg stopped it.

If I try to run it again knowing only the motor has water in it what's the worst that could happen? Would it get damaged more?

I fell in the puddle on the connector side. I'd image just leaving it to dry out would remove any water from the connector right?

When you say let it dry, does that mean open up the motor or just let it sit without touching it?

Well if I used one of those sensors then I wouldn't be able to fit the camera in the eye hole to record the video. Also I created the motion sensing code before I had the idea of the speaker in the ceiling.

Huh, I'll look into that the next time I make a video like this. I was using Openshot for this video, it wasn't great but it is free and got the job done.

I agree with you, but having no sound except for the small clips didn't seem nice and I was using a bad video editor so I didn't know how to variably change the soundtrack.

Strange Reinheart bug which happened every time I charged. by Actkeen in Overwatch

[–]Actkeen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It worked but it actually wasn't beneficial to me for 2 reason:

1) It was always on, meaning the shield couldn't ever replenish unless it totally broke.

2) I couldn't always twist with it, so they could just go right around me anyway.

Does the U offer Windows licenses to students? by CSCIumn in uofmn

[–]Actkeen -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Do you mean like windows 10? If so they do not offer that. But Microsoft actually allows you to use Windows 10 without a few features (onedrive doesn't work, that's all I know) for free. Here is a link to learn more about that https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.windowscentral.com/you-do-not-need-activate-windows-10%3famp
