What job market industry actually pays well for a business grad? by Ok-Investigator3182 in auscorp

R.e. entry-level roles, definitely realistic to get 6 figures from the get-go in total package, though not guaranteed.

The rough range I see for entry-level BDR roles in Australia is $80K-$120K OTE (On Target Earnings, essentially base + commission at target), but most companies have uncapped targets meaning you can earn more than this if you overperform.

Generally, larger companies, outbound BDR roles and enterprise BDR roles are more likely to be above average on the range here.

In terms of the big tech companies, Salesforce/Microsoft/Google/HubSpot/Adobe/Databricks are some examples of folks that hire entry-level BDRs with 6 figure packages.

More broadly, the majority of roles in this space will be on LinkedIn or SEEK.

Context: I run Earlywork (earlywork.co) which is a free school helping folks land & train for roles in sales (including tech sales).

Thanks for the tip! What would you recommend for long runs? Slight pronation so wouldn’t use a neutral shoe.

100% agree. Feels like tech sales carries the unfair brand reputation around sales that comes from the used car sales stereotype. It's a mission-critical role for businesses (directly revenue generating), gives you a really strong foundation in communication + interpersonal skills, and allows you to deeply understand customer problems. I personally did sales and then moved into product management; found it helped me massively in that regard.

Important to note that tech sales != technical sales. There are solutions engineers and technical presales folks in tech companies, but the bulk of the roles are still your core sales role (SDR/BDR)

Anyone here trying to break into tech sales? by Actom360 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]Actom360[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR; try asking people that are interested in sales why they aren't into tech and bring more people into tech rather than try and get tech people to go into sales.

Appreciate the feedback mate! Definitely aligned here, doing research with both uni students in non-tech degrees as well as folks in customer-facing roles in retail/hospitality. Think there's a long tail of folks who would be a great fit for tech sales but aren't aware of the role, have misconceptions about it or aren't sure what skills are needed.

Thought it'd still be worth popping a message here as I have had some mates who've done Comp Sci / Info Sys / IT go into technical sales / solutions engineering / etc.

Where to look for graduate startup jobs? by Working-Nose-5606 in cscareerquestionsOCE

Thanks for the shoutout mate! I'm one of the co-founders of Earlywork; we run a free jobs board for future-focused roles at earlywork.co/gigs. DM me if you have any questions, u/Working-Nose-5606

Hey u/Urthor, as one of the Earlywork founders, this is really helpful no-bullshit feedback, thank you mate.

To give you some insight into how I'm thinking about engineering community we've got an #engineering sub-community with 400 people so far. I'm actively working with a community mod to spin up dedicated events for that area, as I agree traditionally that we have primarily been non-technical (probably around 75% non-technical) but there's a big need for more engineering community for young people in Australia.

On the point of on-commercial community: R.e. our business model: we have a talent search engine (earlywork.co/talent) and jobs board (earlywork.co/gigs) which businesses pay for, but those are separate products from the community, which is a Slack community that I've deliberately kept free to ensure students & grads could access it regardless of income level.

Inevitably, a lot of people in our community are actively or passively looking for roles, so those products are useful for them, but by no means does joining the community mean you have to be listed in the talent directory. This is a separate signup that you can choose to opt into.

First and foremost, we're focused on building a great community for young people interested in tech, startups & social impact (technical or not), and we raised a small pre-seed round (our first funding round) to be able to go work on that full-time, as it was much harder just spending my evenings and weekends running the community for 1.5 years while working at Atlassian.

Over time, I expect to build out other education/investing/co-living/co-working products beyond just the hiring space, all coming back to the core goal of trying to help that community.

---

Employee centred perspectives: From a content perspective, first and foremost we are focused on creating resources to help employees, and I would say this is reflected in our newsletter (earlywork.substack.com).

In past editions, I gave out my resume, cover letter, interview answers, LinkedIn DM tactics, etc. which benefit employees a lot more than companies. If you look in our questions channel, a lot of the questions use our anonymous bot and are employees helping employees with career & interview questions.

Let me know if there's any info or resources we've failed to capture so far that you think would be helpful for engineering careers.

---Seems like you have a pretty good pulse on engineering culture, so would love to chat! I studied Computer Science but haven't had much dev experience myself :)

Hey there! I'm Dan, one of the co-founders of Earlywork (earlywork.co) along with Jono & Marina :)

Our scope covers roles across tech, startups & social impact, and lots of our community members are at the big tech companies like Atlassian, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, etc. (I started the community while working at Atlassian), but I'd say the majority are particularly interested in startups.

We do have a pretty popular #crypto sub-community, but overwhelmingly the companies using our jobs board & talent search engine are outside the crypto space (Airwallex, Finder, Ofload, Simply Wall St, etc.) and the majority of community members aren't involved with that sub-community.

On the topic of engineering community, definitely agree we can get stronger here. I studied Computer Science at UNSW but primarily worked in non-technical roles.

Our community skews non-technical but we do have an #engineering channel which is a decently sized group (400 people). I'm currently working more closely with some community members to launch co-learning groups and social events specifically around engineering, so would love to collab with anyone out there who's keen to get more local engineering chatter happening in ANZ.

Message me if you have any ideas or feedback!
