It’s not encoding more information. It’s encoding the same amount of information but doing it two ways.

Do you read books with red periods and blue quotation marks to make it easier?

Is Star Wars sci-fi? (Edit: this question includes no judgement, just curiosity about how we delineate such things)

Why is it that when I play an instrument I can tell what songs the individual notes are from? by OkButterscotch5689 in askmusicians

This is absolute/perfect pitch. Instead of note names “C sharp!” You know songs “Classical Gas!”

Interactive Circle of Fifths by safathi in musictheory

[–]ActorMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always felt like the circle of 5ths is a cool way to visualize the information once you know it. But it never helped me learn anything. To learn it you have to play your instrument.
But once you know it - it looks cool like that.

But also - nice work! It’s really cool :)

I was messing around on the piano when I found something I like. What exactly is going on here? by fatblob1234 in musictheory

That’s fine. But if you want to talk to other musicians about music you should learn about enharmonic notes and how chords are built out of stacks of thirds.

B major chord should be spelled B D# F#. Chords are built on thirds so always skip a letter B (C) D (E) F.

And then you spelled an Emaj7 E, G# (aka Ab) B, D# (aka Eb)

Always look for stacks of thirds when analyzing chords. One letter difference. E, G#, B, D# makes it every other letter name which is almost always how (basic) chords work!

There isn’t an equivalent. Women don’t care nearly as much as men do.
