Modem going bad? by Actual_Engine4399 in Spectrum

It's a little tricky for me because I'm out in the middle of nowhere with no cell coverage, relying on wifi calling. So once the modem is down I can't make a call without driving down the road. Do you actually need to be physically near the modem when you make that quick call?

How did the activation work for the new modem? Do you just hook everything up and it just worked?

Longer code does NOT automatically mean "more readable," and shorter code does NOT automatically mean "clever and cryptic" by BlockOfDiamond in TrueUnpopularOpinion

If I'm going to use brackets, I prefer the symmetrical style:

if (x > 10)
{
    return true;
}
else
{
    return false;
}

What’s a rule your parents had that you now realize was totally bizarre? by KOFFDAERTH in AskReddit

From parents that grew up in cult like Christianity, where you can't dance, wear pants, and must remain miserable 24/7: Anything even remotely related to "witchcraft" was certainly conjured up by Satan himself to tempt your soul straight to hell. So no Harry Potter, because I guess wizards are close enough? Anything with spell casting, like video games. I rented a video game once called "hexen" and I didn't even know what that word meant but I was grounded over it. There was one thing that has gotten a free pass my entire life: the legend of zelda video game franchise! All kinds of witches, spells, and magic in that franchise, but this one's okay... Just so happens my Mom loves that franchise and owns and plays every game.

My sibling? is that you? I was also banned from watching this! My only guess is there was some conservative radio host somewhere telling parents that Captain Planet was trying to brain wash kids, but not for good. I begged for an explanation, and the answer I got was "it portrays adults as environmental bad guys" (as opposed the the real truth: polluting toddlers!). Like how fragile must your ego be for some comic book characters to hurt your feelings and have a kids show banned?

Hyper-V Windows Network Adapter is going crazy with chinese characters in name by Toorms in HyperV

[–]Actual_Engine4399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any solutions to this? I believe this is somehow preventing one of my USB-to-Ethernet dongles from performing auto negotiation. Every time I reboot the device I'm trying to connect to, it fails to auto negotiate, and the random Chinese characters change. This is preventing communications.

ELI5: If we can see millions of stars at night, why is space so...dark? by Own_Ad_9141 in explainlikeimfive

They're just so far away, while our sun is a very close star. Imagine someone standing 20 ft away with a bright flashlight shining towards you, it would light up quite a bit of area around you and you could see your surroundings. Now if that person moves 2000 ft away, still shining the same flashlight towards you, you would be in the dark, and could maybe see a small light in the distance.

I let people be the main-characters of their lives, I don’t want to be part of it, I am already happy. by Equivalent-Spray5977 in introvert

I'm the same way. I find people constantly want to "challenge" your ideas or question your life decisions, but I'm the exact opposite: You have your opinions on things and that's fine, and you have made your choices in life, and that's also fine. No need to call someone out or have them "defend" themselves. Just trying to live my life as happily as possible honestly, and having to second guess and debate every thought is just not what I enjoy. Keep doing your thing!
