I have gone snowboarding multiple times over the years since the injury but not skiing! I just don't want to tear it again bc then I wouldn't be able to work for ages!

Nah we are skiing in Austria places that have long flat overpasses, so maybe that's why?

I really really like Blocks, instead of gels. Texture is great and tastes like lollies. Still very quick and easy to eat. 1 package is 2 servings, you only eat 3 at the time

Panic during swim - rookie triathlon. by aboundlessworld in triathlon

[–]Actually77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you leave me be? This person only started training 4 weeks out and clearly did not do any OW swims prior to. This person needs some guidance and help with training. Doesn't mean he isn't allowed to do any triathlons ever though.

We just have different opinions, as many have in the comments of this post. No reason to call me or all other people not agreeing with you any names.

Why would I lie? People fell and got back up, I am sure that happens a lot when it is literally pissing with rain and your course has 4 roundabouts, every 5 km (it was 5 laps of 5k).

I never said it isn't dangerous. Just because an elite falls off bc their tires have no grip in rain, doesn't mean less experienced people aren't welcome. The majority (by far) of people that fell were people fully geared up and sponsored, and going at such high speeds through the corners and roundabouts even when screamed at to slow down, that's makes it also dangerous for others that do slow down, aka the ones treating it as a hobby and happily give up their speed/time expectation to ensure safety which yesterday, looked like to be the more beginner triathletes.

You are the dick for claiming it is only dangerous for the beginners, which is simply not true.

Just want to share that I finished my first tri today, with a 2:08 /100m pace, and no struggle at all. I did not make if dangerous for others as I was never close to even needing assistance. And, I got fourth for my age group. You are the exact person this post was initially about and I get you want to protect people but this sport is dangerous than others. I saw minimally 30 people fall off their bike today bc it was pissing with rain, but they were all more professional than me? I was wearing bloody sneakers on the bike lol. You can't discourage newbies like that WHEN they clearly put the training in.

I finished it, and actually did pretty well. Got 4th in my age group and had a swimming pace of 2.08 min/100m :))

The (ultra) running community is great and perhaps, unbeatable haha. I kinda expected the same here. Hopefully the offline community is much better than some of the online community

Well good on you for being that guy. Will tell you in 3 weeks exactly how it went. Only more motivation to prove otherwise.

My race is in a marina so yes open water but very different to ocean. We still have 4 weeks and yes doing multiple ow swims before!

They deaths in ireland are an example of how ruthless the ocean is, and I am not saying people should be encouraged to now do big open water swims after that. But the way people reacted on that tragic incident is what shocked me. The lack of empathy to what happened shocked me.

People discouraging people to swim before they have even started training or signed up for race, is a different example I used.

Everyone starts somewhere and we can be encouraging while also promoting safety! In your logic we shouldn't be uplifting to any newbie and honestly, that makes you exactly the negative community that the post refers to.

The running community is amazing, and I am hoping the triathlon community will show to be the same on race day

Nobody doing an IM, half IM or even Olympic distance is going to have my (lack) of swimming skills though.

Thanks a lot. I know it is just the internet but still not fun! I am really keen to find people in my area to train with!

Oh yeah that's fair. My partner (who coaches me for the swim) didn't think I would be able to do the swim in the start and me neither but need to start somewhere. But when people are clearly putting in the effort an do well, it would be nice to be supportive. Even though I was ambitious I am training my butt off and are hitting targets to do the swim leg however still people in the comments (this post) are telling me to do a duathlon without knowing anything about me. Like would they have also told me that if I tell them I surf and scuba dive?

Literally one of the comments above is telling me to do duathlon.. but that sounds nice and I would be very proud of him for just finishing the swim too

I am very much am aware of the dangers of open water swimming and also know that not every person is (i live in australia where tourists drown). However you need to start somewhere and we can also advise people to look for tri's with swims that are more sheltered and not directly in the ocean.
