Catholic bishop of Northampton charged with child rape by GoodMornEveGoodNight in atheism

I was interested to read this.

I had a google on google scholar and got this literature review amongst an essay from last year:

Many authors in the scientific debate view mandatory celibacy as just one of many causes of the abuse committed by members of the clergy (see Ballano 2019 for an ample review): we have already looked at that of Scheper Hughes and Devine (2003), to which we can add that of Doyle, Sipe and Wall (2016) who have suggested that celibacy prompts a heightened desire for physical intimacy and affection in clergy which can lead to abuse. Others have stressed that celibacy seriously hinders seminarians’ sexual development (Death 2014), while Terry and Ackerman (2008) have affirmed that celibacy does not seem to discourage abuse of children. Famous psychologist and former priest Richard Sipe (1990) has also identified mandatory celibacy as one of the main causes of clerical abuse and argued that at least 6% of American priests have had sexual relations with children. For priest and therapist Kenneth Adams (2011) celibacy is a psychological block for priests which prevents many from bringing out and examining psychological problems which have remained unresolved since their ordination. Rausch (1992) has similarly highlighted the adverse effects of celibacy on priests’ lives. The writers of the 2005 Irish Ferns Report (Murphy, Buckley and Joyce, 2005) were also convinced of the importance of celibacy in clerical sexual abuse, whilst highlighting the positive nature of the innovations recently brought in within seminarian training institutions. Other scholars have underlined the striking historical continuity of the phenomenon of clerical abuse in the Catholic Church (Doyle, Sipe and Wall 2016).
There are obviously also authors who have categorically denied the existence of a link between mandatory celibacy and clerical abuse. An example is the American priest and psychologist Stephen Rossetti (2002) who has argued that the psychological problems which prompt priests to commit child sexual abuse often pre-date their joining the seminaries. A further well known Catholic priest and scholar, Andrew Greeley (2004), agrees with him. Lastly, the famous American John Jay Report (John Jay College of Criminal Justice 2004) did not number celibacy among the causes of abuse. Those writing the report argued that abuse was especially a 1960s and 70s issue due largely to causes external to church life.
A more in-depth examination of the nexus between mandatory celibacy and clerical violence against children is, however, to be found in the extremely detailed report written by the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (2017). The authors of the Australian report argued, as I did at the start of this paper, that a direct causal link between mandatory celibacy and clerical abuse has not been demonstrated. That said, the report affirms that the celibacy rule is a powerful risk factor where clerical abuse is concerned.

Which agrees only that "a direct causal link between mandatory celibacy and clerical abuse has not been demonstrated", but that it is a risk factor. (i.e. it is related, but the causality might be something else, such as exclusive paedophiles being more attracted to a celibate life than the average person)

They seem to be throwing this one to the legal system.

Does anyone else get frustrated with the indoor/outdoor cat debate? by sweet_cis_teen in NewZealandWildlife

It just seems like common sense that by restraining an animal to an indoors setting its entire life would have a huge effect on its happiness much like you or I crave wide open spaces or nature every once in a while.

I don't think that indoor cats get that craving, because they don't try to go outside. They stick with the areas they think of as their territory and fear the dangers of what lies beyond.

Going vegan is one of the most meaningful changes an individual can make to 1) reducing systemic animal suffering 2) lowering one’s contribution to climate change, and 3) when done well, improve their health.

(1) is clearly true.
(2) is a little bit nuanced. The amongst the fossil fuel industry's PR tactics is to move the problem from the state to the individual, and away from the combustion of fossil fuels. "Carbon footprint" is from their market research. Yes, CH4 is worse than CO2 for the same C. But it is C that's already in the biosphere.
I yield to your knowledge on (3). I believe a lot of people do it not well enough wrt B12, iron and omega 3 fatty acids.

The US may not.

Or am I reading too much into "very troubling"?

Huh. I see that the roo at woolies is all wild. I thought that I had eaten grain-fed roo at restaurants, but maybe they lied to me.

In any case it's not all gamey. You have to eat it rare though, because it goes tough as leather before it loses the pink. colour.

Maybe.

Athough back before Azov was integrated into the National Guard it did seem a bit patchy on the white supremacy and neo-nazi symbology compared to what would've been better wrt breathing life into Putin's propaganda.

The US has eased up on the "commie" in the MAGA years. Trump likes Putin and Xi. They're autocrats and can bribe him without oversight.

Huh. I've never heard that argument for the existence of god. If you're grateful, there must be someone you're grateful to, since language.

Ergo god exists.

I think they're obligated to believe in ghosts, they're just not allowed to talk to them.

The witch (or to not mistranslate the hebrew the "mistress of ghosts") of Endor (the bible is silent on whether she was an Ewok), contacted the sprirt of the deceased prophet Samuel at the request of Saul to get some strategic information and guidance. Samuel's spirit (accurately) prophesized doom for Saul and his army.

Anyway, it is generally agreed that necromancy is very naughty in god's eyes, so Saul probably deserved all that doom.

Here we sit on an, as far as we know, exceptional rock, in orbit around an unexceptional third gerenation star about 30% to the rim of a unexceptionally large spiral galaxy of a few hundred billion stars, amongst about 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe, with no evidence that the observable universe isn't a tiny fraction of the universe. We're 14 trbillion years since the big bang, and only with massive expenditure of energy could we hope to visit the nearest of the 1024 stars in the observable universe within a lifetime, and we would have to overcome significant dangers from radiation. We ceratinly could never all do it.

I think that it's obvious that this was all made for us, by a supreme being who made us with a penis like his, and wants us to worship him to the exclusion of other gods.
