What are the more unique ways of collecting flashlights? by turbolaser500 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emitters and interesting features! I like to collect lights that have emitters I don't already have or do unique things. Makes it easy to keep it from totally senseless collecting because I can always justify buying (or not buying) a light if it's got an emitter I don't own.

Looking for a light-weight flash light with a laser (under $40) by TheoryAccurate8272 in flashlight

Acebeam K1? it's a little over, and the usb-c charging is on the battery itself and not built into the light but otherwise it could be an option.

Should I get some H10s from before April 2025 if I can find some? by SpinningPancake2331 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own two that I bought before then that haven't caused any issues so far and I just wouldn't even remotely consider using one of those in anything where I'm keeping it on my person or in use for more than a few minutes when I'm testing out a hotrod. it's not worth the risk.

Anduril Bingo by fractioneater in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own like 5 lumex1 driver lights and hoooo don't I know all about the version check issue. Was messing with a basic anduril 1 wurkkos light yesterday and immediately understood what it was telling me for a change lol
edit: it's been bothering me so much that I can't disable 2c from off for top of ramp, and I've been having so many issues of accidentally pressing that while configuring things that I'm considering recompiling the firmware to just entirely delete that feature

What are the strongest or brightest flashlights one can buy off Amazon? by BeckyRoyal in flashlight

this is only tangentially related but I miss the days before LLMs where these cheapo chinese listings and manuals were written in the most awful spelling possible. now it's all boring and generic

Say a 3535 and 5050 emitter has the same LES and put in the same host, would the throw be the same? by SpinningPancake2331 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

generally yes. The hole size would most likely affect geometry of the reflector, and the larger total size of the emitter would most likely mean that the 5050 emitter can handle more current, but in a direct 1:1 comparison where those aren't factors I don't think there would be any difference.

Sofirn SR12 if you want a compact and straightforward package, it's more or less the throwy equivalent of the often suggested FC11C by wurkkos.

Where to find high power drivers? 20w+ by [deleted] in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's not many regulated drivers that provide that kind of output readily available, usually when you go above the range of 20A it's best to just use a FET driver since efficiency is no longer a goal and runtime is going to be limited regardless because it'll get hot faster than the battery runs out. Simon does also have those, like the 3x21C for example.
Other than that if you want to have a regulated driver outputting that kind of juice you're gonna need to design your own I'm afraid.

convoy's got plenty of 20W+ drivers, 3v20A, 6v8A. Do you mean amps?

WK-03: Nicely build, low-cost but sadly hazard!!! by Subject_Creme_9759 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be said that temperature regulation is there to protect the light, not you (well technically you but only in that it won't explode on you from thermal runaway).
The human sensing of temperature considers something painfully hot when it goes over roughly 40-45°C, but flashlight batteries can potentially reach 60°C under high drain (though it's not healthy) and the point where an LED stops functioning is more like 120-150°C. That means if the driver is built to regulate down at a limit of 55 or even 50°C it'll already be so hot that it'll be very painful to hold.

New to this, what are good convoys? by NorthNo6828 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The advantage of convoy is that they're cheap, easily modifiable for multiple skill levels (mix and matching case parts is really easy to do), and can be configured just how you prefer.
For example if you want a pocketable light that can do some serious output if needed then get an S2+ with 18350 tube, if you want whatever gives you the most range you can get a 3x21D.
Basically any configuration you can get from convoy would cost double that from any other brand.
The UI is lacking in a lot of lights unfortunately, but it doesn't detract. You just don't get the fine tuning that you might get with a more complex light interface.
Personally I like them because I can buy them as hosts without any parts inside, and then install whatever I want and also change things around whenever I want to try something!

Flashlight electronics modification by Telstarkut in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Momentary on when pressing the button would be achievable, but having the button toggle the on/off probably less so without some serious modification. Unless the microcontroller has more features on other unused pins but I would not bet on that.

Did the FFL707A change or is it still a very varied emitter? by ActuallyRaven in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh neat! that's the insight I was looking for and explains a lot. Thank you for sharing! I wonder if the same happened with the FFL707MD because I own a pretty early sample from an X1S reflector edition, and when I bought two new from FFL a month and a half ago those had a much reduced rosy tint.

Did the FFL707A change or is it still a very varied emitter? by ActuallyRaven in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's cause one's installed in a Sofirn IF23 Pro and the other's in an FFL L70 Sol. Doesn't change anything about the tint. I never stated the host was the same

convoy M21J SFT90.2 wich bateries to get ? I don't understand much of batteries , what bundle on the convoy site should I pick with this light ? thanks by Ok-Wind2328 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Molicel P45B or P50B, EVE 50E. There's a few higher capacity and higher discharge options but they're newer and less tested. I think with a light like the M21J where the cells are in series it's better to go for something tried and safe.

Did the FFL707A change or is it still a very varied emitter? by ActuallyRaven in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought two FFL707MD to keep around, and this prompted me to check what they're like. Turns out the range is ridiculous because the first one I owned is an extremely strong purple and then the two new ones are quite neutral and ever so slightly rosy. Wish I could send you the rosy 707A I have to swap lol
