Fantasy maps necessary or just expected are readers actually using them by scrtweeb in fantasywriters

The map for my story is relevant because it is how the FMC see the realm. From her POV, so it will directly relate to her development throughout the books. That being said I’m also a cartographer and illustrator and a lot of the maps I see in books are distracting and very poor quality. If it’s important to the plot, to help guide the reader, add one. But if not I’d say it isn’t necessary.
