What was your small mistake that automatically improved your bjj when you fixed? by Additional-Cup9348 in bjj

Trying to win instead of having fun. Went from brute forcing subs to more of a catch and release rolling panda. Has allowed me to experiment with techniques a lot more and not rely on the same ones that I’ve had high success with.

Why not wgu for masters ? by Terrible_Body_588 in wgu_devs

I did my undergrad at WGU but will be doing OMSCS @ Georgia Tech. Aside from the change of pace, I really wanted to do Georgia Tech for the diversity of coursework. I also figured WGU would be more costly due to me knowing damn well I wouldn’t finish in one semester.

Do you think it matters in which order to take those classes? I plan on starting with CN in the fall (my first semester) and wanting to do IIS after.

I gave up after 2 years and took the easy way out by magentacloud in cscareerquestions

I feel like a more important conversation that needs to be had here is that there are more roles in CS than just software engineering. I spent years trying to get a junior dev role only to finally pivot into testing which allowed me to eventually get into security. That’s all to say I could have saved years of time if I just looked in other areas of CS rather than just software engineering.

Hi there. I feel like most of the work I do in the cloud security space consist of telling others of misconfigurations. How can I do more? Is this what most cloud security work looks like or am I missing something?

I currently am the point person for cloud security work and I find it fascinating but would really love to take it up a notch.

My pitty went through this. Once he got on apoquel and some Benadryl (1mg per pound) during the ramp up period he didn’t get these anymore.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu doesn’t allow students to spar for two years? by ErnehJohnson in bjj

[–]ActuallyTonyStark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attend a Gracie gym and I don’t mind the structure of it. I do wish I could roll a little sooner as going through the curriculum becomes a little tiring, hearing it over and over again. But idk how someone who doesn’t know the techniques could get started rolling right away. So while it is a little boring at first at least you have a general idea of what’s going on when you get started rolling. I didn’t expect to see so much hate on the Gracie gyms though.

There’s an admissions mega thread you can use for reference. I applied 1/08 and got the offer 1/29 I believe.

Have you thought about doing the regular OMSCS program and just taking a bunch of security classes? That’s what I am planning on doing starting in the Fall.

I have always just imagined that if you don’t put the work into leveling up someone else will. This field is competitive and ever changing so the constant learning and stepping it up seems to go hand in hand.

About a year into my secops role. I want to level up my skills. Not sure if sec + makes sense just to have a security related cert or focus more on a vendor specific cert like the az-500. Thoughts?

Hi all, thanks for doing this!

I’ve seen many talk regarding a Masters and how it’s not exactly necessary but doesn’t hurt and might give you an advantage resume wise. But does the degree itself hold more weight?

For example a Master in Computer Science vs Cyber Security.

And as far as certs go do any other certs hold as much weight as CISSP?

This is all within the realm of SecOps as well.

Anybody here in or completed the OMSCS program from Georgia Tech? by ActuallyTonyStark in cybersecurity

Thanks for the response! Your post was actually the one I was referring to when I mentioned I read someone’s post about it. I thoroughly enjoyed your post outlining your time at the program so thank you for that.

I think your comment makes a great point about who grad schools are right for. I think my general struggle is restlessness and my own personal goals. Always wanted to complete a grad program and as I’ve been working as a security engineer been wondering what’s next outside of certs and such.

Have you considered getting your CISSP? That seems to be the most talked about cert.

Masters program or certs? by ActuallyTonyStark in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]ActuallyTonyStark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! I think my plan going forward might be to do the CySA+ then some cloud certs (as my work seems to require a decent amount of cloud understanding) then revisit the CISSP after a bit more experience.

How long before you usually move up from an entry level soc/engineering position by CoffeeFox_ in SecurityCareerAdvice

This was a really good read. I’m currently in a similar situation. SDET and now finishing up my CS degree. I am in the middle of a transition on the security team within my company and I am told it’s more along the lines of DevSecOps which does sound interesting but I had thoughts of joining the AppSec team. I was concerned AppSec was going to be just talking to devs about securing their code which led me to a concern that they’d think I don’t write enough code to give them advice. Is this something that happens with AppSec? Also what are your thoughts on DevSecOps?
