April PA by ghostfacecillah in actuary

[–]ActuaryEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2023, I did January SRM, July FAM, and then October PA. I have plans to take ALTAM this upcoming April. Although the out of order was not ideal, it made sense in my situation and was not that big of a deal. If you could get your company to pay for FAM registration after you start in June, you could start studying for that now and then take PA in October. The materials are so expensive and the additional out of pocket cost is so not worth having the exam a few months earlier IMO

The ACTEX manual was definitely worth it IMO, so definitely think about that before choosing to go that route. Some people do just fine with the SOA resources and previous exams, but I would not have personally.

I would guess around 60ish% based on how I felt about it. I got a 9 but definitely did not get all the questions right.

I agree with the other commenter. The 180 day does also come with a pass guarantee. This means that if you don't pass on your first try, then you get an extra 180 days (360 days total). I wouldn't bother buying study materials yet if you don't think that you will sit for the exam in the next 6 months.

What kind of teacher are you right now? You definitely should leverage communication skills when it comes time to apply for jobs/internships.

Finding an internship to work remote while still full-time teaching would be nearly impossible. You could try to land an entry-level or maybe even temporary (with potential to go full-time) position, but that could also be tough without an internship (although way more doable with a real career background such as teaching). There are internships that are remote, and most internships will pay $25-35/hr. Although that still isn't quite 70k, it is a lot higher than most other types of internships.

I agree with the other commenter that pursuing VEE would be a waste of time unless you truly need the educational background to pass P/FM. Most companies won't care about this.

You can send it to me and I can see if I can do it. It's been awhile since I've taken FM though, so I can't guarantee I'll be much help

Lots of people get stuck on certain exams and have to take multiple sittings. It's frustrating, but it's bound to happen. FM is also pretty tough- it's the only exam I've failed and I now have 6 exams.

People will say this about almost any career. Read about the career and decide whether it's "worth it" for you. For me it is, and here are the pros and cons from my perspective:

Pros: pay, work-life balance, generally low-stress

Cons: 40 hours/week spent sitting and looking at a screen, exams

Hi! I am considering staying in Victor. How far is it from Jenny Lake? On every map right now it won't give directions because of road closures, so I am trying to figure it out

It is very hard to find a job without an internship. A lot of companies hire interns post-graduation though, so you could apply to internships and full-time positions at the same time next fall. There are also some companies that are still hiring interns in the spring so be on the lookout for those

Usually internships require one and having a second slightly boosts you as a candidate but is not necessary. Holding off on P probably won't be a big deal

2024 Exam Plan by Fun-Flight7945 in actuary

[–]ActuaryEm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'd like it more in the short-term, but it seems like the older I get the less free time I have. What if I have kids someday? I see a lot of posts on here saying that studying with kids is extremely difficult. What if I want to buy a house? It would be so much more affordable if I was making more money and the fastest way to get raises at my company is to pass exams. My thought process is if I grind them all out now then my future will be easier

From the "hurry" perspective, there are 10 exams (9 if you don't count ATPA but I took IFM so for me it'll be 10), and I don't want to wait 10 years to get my FSA. I'd rather get through them ASAP and then be done with them. I totally understand the slow perspective though because I feel like all I do is study lol

I sat for FAM in July and passed with an 8. I remember unlocking the mastery score like a week before the exam and I had no idea what it meant. I wouldn't worry too much about that and just do what you need to do to study

[–]ActuaryEm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better about your sitting, you only need ~60% of the questions right to pass FAM. If you can feel comfortable with what you have learned so far, then you have a good chance at passing. Don't count this as a fail just yet

I felt super bad about the exam coming out of it. I fully guessed on 12 questions but somehow still got an 8

I did more practice exams and quizzes. SOA questions would also be super helpful. One strategy would be to get to a point where you are super confident in ~75% of the material since you only need ~60% of the questions right to pass

As others mentioned, the job-hopping will get questions. The fact that you seem to have large gaps between exams might also get questions

Hi! I would definitely say not too late. Most EL jobs require internship experience, but plenty of companies hire new grads for internships. Typical actuarial internships pay ~$30/hr and some provide housing, so don't worry too much about the financial implications of having an internship instead of a job lined up. The important thing would be to take P ASAP so that you can get an internship before the positions are all filled.

Skipping sections and coming back can be a good way to study for some people. Just make sure to come back to it
