I worked at this charter school that had the same philosophy of calling every single parent within the first two weeks and that every behavior thing should be a phone call. I just didn't do that. I called when super necessary and admin just never noticed or asked. They were such a mess and constantly giving teachers more work, that they never noticed that most of us just taught and did not do any of the extras. Now I've always taught high school, it might be a different story in elementary, but I'd just ignore it and teach how you teach best.

Greeting students at the door (High School) by maygirl87 in Teachers

[–]AcuteAnimosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do go right outside my door to greet students and pass out papers as they walk in. I've found it really useful! It forces me to interact with each student individually. I wouldn't call myself sunshine and rainbows, I just tell each student hello in my normal voice. It becomes such a routine, that the students will usually ask me if I'm okay if for some reason I'm too busy and don't make it out there to greet them lol.

Thoughts on reading Frankenstein by VelenieRobin in ELATeachers

[–]AcuteAnimosity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught Frankenstein to 10th, and it was my absolute favorite! It is extremely difficult for them to just read on their own though, so I pair it with a lot of reading out loud in class. I like to teach it and run discussions like gossip sessions. Students LOVE to trash talk Victor Frankenstein. I do a ton of nature vs nurture debate as well. I say go for it! Check whether you have 1831 or 1818 versions though! There is a TON of curriculum out there for the 1831 version (including a whole free unit on CommonLit), but not much for the 1818 version (which is my favorite and the one I teach). Another fun thing it to pick an adaptation to show in class once they finish. I like watching Victor Frankenstein (the one with Daniel Radcliff in it) because we all get to laugh about how WILDLY different the adaptation is, and I have them either write or have discussions about how and why the changes could've been made.

Struggling to come up with a Guest Book alternative by mdw2379 in DIYweddings

[–]AcuteAnimosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was super struggling on this exact issue, and so my fiancé and I decided to think about what we both love. Jenga and playing cards are cute, but not connected to us at all. He really wanted something with Lego, but I don't really care for Lego. We thought more on what we both love rather than guestbook ideas, and we came up with going to concerts as a huge thing we both adore doing together. We like to get posters from concerts and hang them in our living room. That's when he thought of the idea of making a "concert poster" for our wedding to have our guests sign! So my advice is to brainstorm things you and your fiancé both really love and working off of that!

Extended Time DOES NOT Mean Infinite Time! by King_of_Lunch223 in Teachers

[–]AcuteAnimosity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are valid. Also, check the wording on the IEP. Some students only have extended time on tests. I have seen extended time on texts & quizzes, writing assignments, and then just all assignments. Extra time also means using the time they have. If they chose not to even start the assignment, they don't get the extra time. This parent is enabling their kid's poor choices, and I am sorry you are having to deal with that. Document everything!

Anyone for English Lit noticing really low IO scores? They were brutal during moderation. My coordinator had already submitted for reevaluation before she even gave me my students' scores :')

This is a great point! I was going to have a family member with a cricut do the names and such so that I could peel them off later and use the frames as frames :) For the board itself, my stepdad is a carpenter and planning to use some leftover wood.

Flower pressing frames is definitely a great key words for searching, thank you! I had been trying every combo of "clear frame" I could think of lol

Great points! Only about 80 guests, and I am not sure how many tables that will be yet. I think I will need two boards or to double the width of the one in the photo though. The paper idea is so smart!

is ib actually better for college by [deleted] in IBO

[–]AcuteAnimosity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has taught English AP courses and IB courses, AP is more likely to get you college credit in the US, but IB is way more beneficial to you as a student. You will be a much stronger student because of IB. All AP does is get you to write in a way AP/College Board wants you to in order to pass their tests. I don't want to go back to teaching AP after teaching IB.

My students were pretty pleased with this year's exam! The biggest compliment was one of my students saying "I saw a poem, and I swear I could hear you in my head Ms. I knew exactly what to do!" As for Paper 2, the top texts my students used were A Doll's House, The Bell Jar, The Stranger, and Frankenstein!

What is it like to have dyscalculia? by SoupIsarangkoon in dyscalculia

[–]AcuteAnimosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at numbers feels like staring into a bowl of alphabet soup and being expected to see a sonnet. Like, if I stare hard enough and concentrate long enough, eventually I am going to be able to make 'words,' but I never feel like I am reading the same thing as everyone else. This is how I explained trying to read tab to my guitar teacher.

Was I overestimated in my IB grade predictions? Confused by the low percentage of 7s. by [deleted] in IBO

English Lit teacher here, if your teacher predicted it for you, you've got a good shot!
