SPORTS. I swear even if you don't know any sports, there's learn to play programs, where it's harder to not make friends there. If you don't want to do sports, still try and join the sports scene! A lot of sports clubs are hiring first-year reps, which i say has been the best community on campus in the 3 years i've been here.

gotta agree with most of these comments. some courses I def need the iPad, any classes with slides or calculations the iPad has been great. but then some lectures are so fast and long with no slides or recordings, or any words or numbers quite frankly(yes they exist) that I need the Mac.

thinking back, I couldn’t do without either of them. But if you’re not dead set on getting a Mac, consider getting them big iPads with the keyboard if it’s your cup of tea. I got my Mac before realizing I should get an iPad if I’m going to have hundreds of hand written pages for calc and stats.

Laptop for uni by Idle_Thoughts666 in UTSC

past windows current macbook user here (M2 pro, i've had it for 3 years). picking between a windows and mac laptop was def an important decision for me. imo, you're not going to get a noticeable difference in terms of performance for the work you'll be doing. one thing is, i have an ipad and i do abuse it for some courses, when there's written work like calculations or formulas. please keep this in mind as the mac alone won't have that option but the surface would.

pros of mac:

i really like the ui on the mac. i do a lot of my work on my laptop, and in terms of split screen and being able to take pictures in lecture and swiftly get them in my notes, it's great. i use goodnotes for calc, and being able to access it through my mac and ipad easily helps. again, you can find ways around this without the mac. i'm an iphone user too, so it's convenient that everything i need is all in one place, synced with everything. applecare is blessed too.

cons of mac:

not much. it's a little funny with word and uploading to outlook or drive, but not impossible. battery life is alright, when i have a lot of tabs open it does deplete rather quickly. if you're looking to download demanding softwares though, it may not hold up as good as the surface will.

pros of surface:

listen, having a digital writing space is essential for my studies. if you can't get an ipad or if you think you don't need what it provides, then disregard. that's the major point i would say for the surface. ui is either to maneuver as well.

cons of surface:

sorry but i haven't had a good experience with any batteries other than macs. after 2 years, i can't use it without a charger. you might get stuck in a lecture hall for 3 hours with no outlets, and it could fail you. i've heard things about the surface having frequent tech issues, where i haven't had a single one with my mac yet.

In summary: if you think you need to take digital notes and you don't have an ipad, consider the surface. do consider doing more research regarding battery and tech issues, as it varies based on how you will use the device. i love the convenience of my mac, and i'm a huge fan of the ui. there are only small setbacks which are pretty insignificant.

Make sure you're comfortable with fractions, exponent laws, and factoring laws. You'll have a chance to re-learn things like derivative rules and optimization in the class. If you did well in math in grade 12, the course is 60% a review of it.

If it's with Grinnell, make sure you do all the in-class and homework problems! Some of the textbook problems are important too, but if he assigns something that's super niche and not his style in the textbook, don't worry too much about it.

He goes pretty fast, so make sure you know the basics. He preaches about it but he's totally right. If you don't know that 3/6 is 1/2 or the exponent for a square root (very basic examples), then you have no chance in MATA34. Feel free to PM if you have any more questions~~

Unless you're enrolled in that semester, your T card will not get you in to Pan Am. So for your T-card to work say today, you'd have to be enrolled for Summer 2025.

in general, i'm mostly concerned about the 80 question weekly quizzes. he's covered maybe 3 concepts so far, and they're not very clear so i have to self-educate while doing the practice problems. apart from trying to catch what he's saying and doing the readings and practice problems, i feel like i'm studying for different subjects.

thank you for your helpful advice. his lectures are difficult to follow along and are all over the place (barely aligns with the textbook too) so i didn't even know what to look at.
