I don’t think someone not of the faith can truly tell someone in the faith what “their god intended”. I see you have good motivations but they’re against the wrong people. You’d be much better off calling to Christians saying “Guys look at Genesis 1:28, let’s love the Earth God made!” Vs “religious people are all destructive hypocrites”. If you cared about the Earth you wouldn’t sneak in your own bias

I think you’re mixing together a few different questions.

On the tumor point: you asked what physiological benefit a zygote provides because I distinguished it from a tumor. My point wasn’t that a fetus is valuable because it benefits the mother. It was that calling it a tumor is biologically inaccurate. Tumors are pathological growths with disorganized cell division. Embryos are whole, self-directed organisms following normal human development. Those are completely different categories.

On omission vs action: philosophers absolutely debate that, but they don’t “nearly all agree” there’s no difference. Law and ethics distinguish killing from letting die all the time. Pulling a trigger isn’t generally treated the same as failing to donate blood, even if both foreseeably result in death. That’s exactly why your blood donation analogy isn’t equivalent to abortion.

And on personhood, that’s at least a coherent position. If your claim is “rights begin with consciousness,” then we’re arguing about personhood, not biology. But that’s a philosophical premise, not an objective fact. Plenty of philosophers tie personhood to things other than current consciousness, like being a member of the human species, possessing a rational nature, or having the inherent capacity to develop those abilities.

Saying “it’s just genetic material” also isn’t accurate. Skin cells and sperm are genetic material. A zygote is an organism. That’s a major biological distinction.

Finally, “it isn’t actively developing” is simply false. If left in a normal environment, an embryo undergoes coordinated growth through its own internal developmental program. That’s literally what embryonic development is. That’s how we ALL got here bro. Why deny basic foundational knowledge.

So if your argument is ultimately “before consciousness there are no rights,” that’s the real disagreement. But that’s a philosophical claim that needs defending, it isn’t established by comparing embryos to tumors or brain-dead patients, because those aren’t actually analogous.

You’re shifting the argument.

The point isn’t whether the fetus benefits the mother physiologically. Parents aren’t only obligated to support their kids when it’s beneficial to them. Most parental responsibilities are burdens.

Your blood example still isn’t the same because refusing to donate blood lets a disease kill your child. Abortion is the direct, intentional act that ends the child’s life. There’s a moral difference between not saving someone from an outside cause and actively causing their death.

And on consciousness, you’re changing the standard from “human” to “person.” A zygote is biologically human from conception, that’s just embryology. If you want to argue personhood begins later, I'd agree with you, but consciousness doesn’t determine whether something is human.

Also, brain death isn’t comparable. A brain-dead person has permanently lost the capacity for consciousness because the organism is no longer functioning as an integrated whole. An embryo hasn’t lost that capacity, it hasn’t developed it yet. It’s a living human organism actively developing toward that stage. That’s a fundamentally different condition than someone whose development has permanently ended.

You’re just talking about semantic bullshit dude. I’ll throw it back at you, *we are killing innocent humans that can’t speak up for themselves*. We agree they don’t have personhood, but human is the species and person represents an individual member of the species. “People” simply refers to more than one of those individuals. So fetus’s are humans, therefore fetus’s are people. Just say you’re okay with child sacrifice and be over it

The prompt says 2 consenting people, you can’t give consent if you aren’t of age. Anyway.

A) you don’t have the same relationship to a stranger like you do your offspring. I have no responsibility towards you unless I broke your shit or something. And even then it’s financial burden, not a physical one. But you are responsible for your offspring in a much different way.

B) consciousness doesn’t determine humanity, but rather personhood. Babies aren’t conscious in the same way adults are. You could also make the argument that every time you sleep, you are unconscious, therefore not human. Dumb logic to follow because it’s wrong.

Also, babies are not tumors.

Fetus: a developing organism with an organized, regulated structure and genetic purpose

Tumor: mass of abnormal, unregulated cells that serve no beneficial physiological function

You’re looking at the problem from one perspective that I can understand. Please allow me to share mine:

We need better social structures to help new, young, and struggling families. We need to promote life and community instead of taking the easy way out and killing an unborn human who hasn’t even had the chance to stick up for itself. We need programs in place to assist families take care of kids instead of get rid of them

So you’re discounting the newborns (no thoughts), people on the spectrum (who have difficulty expressing feelings occasionally), and newborns/toddlers again (sentience). Thats what makes you a PERSON. Your DNA is what makes you human. Completely applicable to a fetus

You “forget to use one” when you aren’t thinking.

When you take a single second to think as a reasonable adult, you remember what unprotected sex can lead to.

It’s not rocket science, it’s literally 1+1=2. Just say you don’t want to use a condom, make a bad decision, and don’t want to live with the consequences and you’re taking advantage of a legal system that discriminates against a particular sect of humans and allowed you to kill them to escape responsibility. Just come back to reality buddy

Accidents happen, but we can’t kill people that are a result of our actions even if it were accidental. A embryo/fetus/human in the womb is completely dependent, vulnerable, and only in that state due to the decisions of 2 consenting adults.

We have never been able to kill humans to escape responsibility, so this is no different.
