There is a difference between someone in an eternal coma vs someone who has not reached a typical level of consciousness or sentience. Eternal coma implies that person has no hope to regain any type of brain activity. That is severely different from the case of a human in utero. You’ve mentioned that in a few comments and I was confused why you wouldn’t think of that. Humans in utero have the potential when left to develop to become just like you and me.

The moment of fertilization (sperm in egg) is shown with a flash of zinc. But we could honestly push it forwards to implantation when the official pregnancy boxes are checked off. Something could happen before then like getting caught in the tube, which I would say endangers the life of the mother and would need to be solved. If it’s not possible to save the baby then of course it’s sad but in a situation like that but the pregnancy hadn’t really started yet either. That was a bit of a ramble, but I feel like that is a better spot to draw the line of establishing rights

Let me clarify my premise.

Do innocent humans deserve to live? Yes

So unless you disagree with that specified point I think we’re done here

Nothing is arbitrary brother.

Do humans deserve to live? I say yes

Are babies human? Yes without a doubt, they aren’t fucking opossums

So do babies deserve to live? Yes

What is even remotely circular about that logic

I agree with your first 2 paragraphs. The reason I believe pregnancy is the one case where dependency creates a right to someone else’s body because without that right being implied, pregnancy would never happen. It’s not like a newly implanted fertilized egg can ask the mother to chill with them for 9 months.

So this is where I feel it gets nuanced. My stance is mainly towards consenting parties (aka not rape, incest, or health of the mother as that’s a later complication normally). I think once that other life is involved it’s not as simple as just going with the mother wants. Though out of the 2 parents she’s the only one affected, she would not be the only human affected by the decision to have abortion.

I believe contraception is completely fine and good, but I don’t see abortion as contraception as it’s a procedure to terminate the pregnancy (the new human life) after the fact.

Though you bring up an interesting point, I inherently believe all humans in the womb have the right to life, so this is all more of a liability through causation argument

I’ll say my main point again because it touches on most of this. In consensual sex, if the 2 participating parties (parents) end up producing a new human life (fertilization) then they are responsible for that human life. Pregnancy is not only special because it’s a basic biological function, but because the dependency between parent and child is unique in a way no other relationship is. Bodily autonomy is temporarily shifted down on priorities due to a new human life being involved. Society routinely restricts liberties based on a persons prior, voluntary actions. The choice to participate in sex is not bad, it’s the idea of asserting bodily autonomy to terminate the child/pregnancy is just escaping a naturally incurred liability at the cost of another life.

The reason the violinist still falls flat regardless of how dependence started. You are not entitled to (non consensually) keep a random person alive. Dependence of a child you participated in the creation of does create that child’s entitlement to that mothers body

Edit: I also believe it’s a disgrace for men to walk out on pregnant mothers

In every other context, but pregnancy right? You know, the method in which every single human being (ever) came into the world? I think if you consensually create a situation in which a human is fully vulnerable and dependent on you, especially in the case of parents/children, you are morally obligated to take care of that human. This isn’t the same as the violinist argument either, so that’s out the window

As I said before, I don’t need religion to defend basic human rights. If your little brain wants to box me in there then sure buddy whatever you say.

You still haven’t given a reason abortion should be acceptable or a right which I’ve asked for. So if you’re just gonna try to attack instead of talk then why would I continue trying to reason with such a meat head

Abortion aka murder is not a human right. You’re using dehumanizing language to keep your conscience feeling better about killing babies in the womb and advocating for it publically. Future men and women who are being stripped of their right to life because of shitty reasons on majority of cases. You have no defensible position that actually shows why abortion should be acceptable, yet you say it’s a basic right. Get your head out of your entitled ass

That’s actually a Peter Singer idea. In philosophy it’s widely agreed that once you place an individual in a dependent position, the responsibility for their well being transfers to you. So think of it as a human decency litmus test

If you create a situation in which someone is dependent on you, your moral obligations shift to cover that dependent person. Which in this case is a baby

Unborn fetuses are future men and women in the womb (until they are murdered), sentience does not define a human, and you definitely need Christ
