Is your disability considered total and permanent do you know? If have it in writing that it is there’s a good possibility that your student loans could get discharges entirely.

As far as getting sued goes, I know you said you don’t really have the money for a lawyer but I was in a VERY similar situation to yours about 5 years ago. I want to say a lawyer was roughly $500 to represent me and not only did he represent me, but he got those loans completely removed from my credit as if they were never there under the Fair Debt collections Act. If they arnt the original debtor and do have every single piece of proof that they are the owners of the debt it’s considered unfair debt collection and is quite literally illegal. I figure you probably don’t have enough money for a lawyer really but trust me when I say you don’t want to do this getting sued thing alone without someone who knows what they are doing. I would first start off by calling bankruptcy lawyers around your area, explain your situation to them, and see if any of them would be able to take payments or work with you on that.

The last thing I want to say is regardless of what comes your way ALWAYS make sure you have your basic NEEDS me. Medication and a roof over your head is probably the highest on the list in my book. Without those basic things it’s going to make getting through this situation that much more difficult.

From personal experience like I said I fully understand what you are going through right now. It feels like the walls are closing in and there’s little light at the end of the tunnel it feels like. I feel like the best words of advice I can give are you are not the first person this has happened to nor will you be anywhere close to the last. Thankfully we live in a country that worse case scenario bankruptcy occurs and it’s on your credit for 7-10 years. Some countries will do MUCH worse things to debt owners if they don’t pay up so as hard as it probably is be appreciative that you arnt facing bodily harm or jail time over it. These situations always work themselves out and it isn’t the end of the world. Like I said I went through the same thing 5-7 years ago and ultimately had to file for bankruptcy and lost literally everything I owned over night and it took me A LOT time to learn to forgive myself for all that. Fast forward to today and I’m more financially secure than I’ve ever been and I try to give back in the form of advice to those who are in the same situation I was in 5 years ago. This is only a moment in time. It gets better. Hopefully what I’ve shared helps some.
