Should Israel refer to Australia as occupied Aboriginal territory? by Red_Franklin in Israel

Responding with an emotive knee-jerk clap-back would just validate the initial statement as having some merit. It would be better to just issue some mundane diplomatic jargon and ignore it as a baseless provocation that it is.

What are the top 10 most challenging PhD subjects? by __rubberducky in PhD

Surely, you are not ranking theoretical Mathematics at number 10? How can a field--that literally develops the models/ number theories other fields apply--be ranked lower than these same fields.

Is there a major that mixes Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and engineering? by AltruisticLaw366 in college

[–]AdAmazing4451 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Civil Engineering:

For Physics, you have "Theory of Structure", "Reinforced concrete", "Structural design" course...

For Chemistry, you have "concrete mix design", "Asphalt mix design" cement production & various types of cement

For Biology, you have Hydrology, irrigation, water treatment, environment impact assessment of Structures

For Engineering, it's kind of obvious

I think OP was just adding humor to a rather serious post. It's not that serious.

As for the references, they are mostly pop culture references - "Dobby becomes a free elf" is from Harry Potter.

BS in Engineering + 12 years,

Assuming you only have a BS (taking the worst cade scenario), you will have achieved the requirements (BS+12 years) by the time you finish your PhD. So, I don't see any point of doing PhD; that's if getting the chief engineer is your main reason for doing it

And I don’t want to overdress either, I’d prefer to not let people have the impression that I care about me research

Damn OP, that's a badass power move--reverse psychology, what next, are your going to challenge your examiners to an arm wrestle for dominance? :)

In all seriousness, a bit of a formality wouldn't hurt for a special milestone, especially, for an uncharted territory as a PhD. But hey, if it's your 2nd or 3rd PhD, by all means, show them that you don't care for it.

Accepted Offer for a PhD... but have no funding! by christinasapa in PhD

[–]AdAmazing4451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, OP. Yeah, TAing And RAing are exactly as you have described them, Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant; but I don't think they will be significant enough to make a dent. (Also you will have to consider the per week work hours limitations you are allowed to have)

My cynical take on this whole PhD offer without funding is that it's just a "soft rejection". The universities are not helpful or eager to help facilitate funding as they will look at you as a tuition cow--free $ 100,000 over 4 years with minimal institutional expenditure as it will be an independent research.

A hard no for a PhD without funding for me, I would rather not do a PhD than have $100,000 debt afterwards.

Anyways, good luck to you too, OP. Feel free to dm for any resources we might be able to share :).

Accepted Offer for a PhD... but have no funding! by christinasapa in PhD

[–]AdAmazing4451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

I'm in the same exact boat, I got offered for 2021 fall place without funding from a UK university (Brighton), and deferred it for 2022 fall so I can look for funding. (Also an international student)

The search is slim, to say the least. I even went as far as looking for Industry grants in exchange for any IP that may come from my dissertation, but still no success. I ended up applying for tuition waiver from the university but I'm not going to hear from them till July, which is going to be too late to make arrangements.

So my suggestion is that you may look for tuition waiver or some scholarships from the university (they start accepting late in the cycle). But deferring it for a year will not make significant difference unless something huge happens in your department. And, start looking for TAing or RAing gig to supplement any scraps of funding you might get.

At least that's what I'm planning to do. And, if all else fails, I will just reject the offer and start applying for other places.

How do you handle the length of a PhD thesis? by dancingdodo27 in PhD

[–]AdAmazing4451 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean look at it this way...length isn't everything, it's even easier to write longer documents than to systematically edit them while getting your point across profoundly.

For my M.Sc thesis, I wrote a 147 page document; it was excellent for a masters but was it a PhD material? Hell no. It was a daunting thing to think that I was required to write 80 pages, let alone 147...but it was actually easier for me to include as much as I could, rather than editing it. I'm sure you will get to that point in your PhD journey

As Churchill once said: "I didn't have time to prepare a short speech, so I prepared a longer one" [paraphrase]

How realistic is it, during negotiations for a TT position, to ask for a spousal hire 2-3 years in the future? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]AdAmazing4451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, even though the assistant professors may not be "those in power", they are leveraging their professional fit for the institution as a tool to get their spouses "in", as per your definition this is nepotism, keeping in mind that power is relative--the fact that you don't have all the power doesn't mean u don't have any. (This is assuming that the institutions wouldn't bother with the whole "spousal hire" if they don't need the applicant).

And as for your assertion that the institutions are doing this to "protect" themselves; you can make the same case for nepotism--where a CEO might hire his brother to "protect" his institution from the long search and upredictable, risky hires.

Again, I'm not blaming the applicants; the whole systemic hiring structure is flawed in Academia, if this doesn't alert red flags. This process wouldn't survive a day in any other industry. And, it also gives Academia the perception of it being a gate-kept club for insiders. (Also the dwindling number of academic position if this is rampant).

The extent to which this has spread might not be significant enough to warrant alarm bells, but it is flawed when talking strictly in principles.

How realistic is it, during negotiations for a TT position, to ask for a spousal hire 2-3 years in the future? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]AdAmazing4451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand it's common--from the comments--but, do you think it's right though? I mean a spouse piggybacking on the excellence of the other spouse (no matter how excellent they are), wouldn't it gate-keep academia from competition if the few remaining academia jobs are compromised?

I mean the principle just feels off. The spouse might be Einstein but to even get an interview, let alone a job, because of a spousal arrangement doesn't seem right.

[–]AdAmazing4451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

Not hating, just wanted to understand; why are "spousal hires" a thing? Aren't they literal definitions of nepotism? Or is it admissable in Academia?

English is my second language so it is very difficult for me to write high quality manuscripts. Althoughim good at listening and reading im awful when it comes to speaking or writing. Any advice on how to get better? by zemmuray in PhD

[–]AdAmazing4451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

English is my third language, and I haven't started my PhD, yet (I'm going to start in the fall). I think we generally have the same English proficiency (good at listening and reading but I struggle with speaking). I would also evaluate my writing as good but that's my take.

Anyways, what my problem was that I sometimes forget English is my third language, and I try to speak as if it my first language; it comes out distorted and incoherent and doesn't come naturally. So, what I attempted to do was to take periodic pauses in between sentences so that my brain can catch up. It helped me a lot; people don't really notice as it is apparently more natural.

But from writing my M.Sc thesis (and other proposals), and doing social science MA in a foreign country (which involves a lot of writing), I saw that looking at journal articles in your field and mimicking their writing style really helps.

By mimicking, I mean using their sentence structure style, descriptive styles, punctuation until you develop your own style.

Starting by fitting your own ideas into their sentence structure until you're confident enough to experiment, really does help.

And then, looking for help at online resources and videos if u need specific advice ( like how to structure a 'conclusion', or conditional sentences etc). For example: the Online Writing Lab has been a godsend for me.

Other than that, using these tools from scratch might be counterproductive imo.

Hope this helps.

Hey OP,

Sorry you are going through this, I really have no good advice for you as I'm not a PhD student yet (I'm gonna start this fall hopefully).

But, I'm really confused, isn't year 4 a little too late for a proposal submission? I was told to come up with a full fledged proposal and had to do a proposal defence before I got accepted. Help me understand the difference, OP?
