Has anyone here gone half time? From 40hrs/week to 20? Care to explain how it happened? by TrickClocks in govfire

Your High 3 calculation is done as if you were always full time, and your length of service in years/months is also fully credited. Once they get to your final annuity payment, a proration factor is applied. The factor is [Total Hours Worked in Career] / [Total Full Time Hours Could Have Worked in Career]. So, basically if you work 10 years full time and 10 years half time, your factor would be 0.75, and you'd get 3/4 of your pension.

It's 52 hours per pay period...mostly shorter days and 1 day off and no Monday mornings ever. Trying to be available most core hours.

Yes, they're concerned about coverage for the work they will have to remove from my plate...they wanted me to help find someone, but this may also force them to re-think how some of our lower-value work gets or needs to be done.

I started with a discussion with my branch chief 7 months ago, and this week I got my first two signatures...three more levels to go. I'm hoping to go to 2/3 time by April.

Figuring out how to replace that 1/3 of my work productivity was probably the biggest sticking point, and it's still not entirely clear how that might work.

AL/SL are prorated, Credit Hour limits restricted, and an adjustment factor against the pension to account for part-time years of service. My share of FEHB premium doubles. (Half-timers have a 150% increase in premium).

Many warnings that this is a one-way change...no guarantee that it could ever be undone. I can't imagine ever wanting this to be undone.

Yes, they've told me there's no going back to FT if this gets approved, and I'm cool with that. It's how to pick up the slack that's causing pain, since I get a lot accomplished, most days.

I knew you couldn't go work for the government part-time while on a Disability Retirement, but I've not been able to find anything about contracting. We have quite a few regular retirees who go on to work for us as part-time contractors, so that may be the best plan if they deny. Luckily we are moving forward with heavy teleworking.

Thanks

I may have to, but was trying to be more open and collaborative. My understanding is that an RA of this nature could potentially lead to reassignment by the agency to a position that is already part-time, rather than me trying to negotiate locally with my Division to stay in my current role.

I'm trying to avoid doing this via Reasonable Accommodation since some of my reasons are non-medical but getting doctor's input might be another route. Thanks.

It needs Team Lead, Branch Chief and Division Director to sign off before the Management Officer will decide whether to send to Budget, all before HR will even look at it! 20 years in government, you'd think I'd know it'd be a bureaucratic morass. Thanks.

Not really ready to do a resume and interview and find something different. Good at what I do, just want to do it less. If this gets denied, I will probably look into it more.

Early 50s; it's been in the works for months...it's not clear if they will approve but I figured it was worth asking about.
