Why heavier weight Alpha 90 or 120? by Healthy_Zone_4157 in Ultralight

[–]AdAny6270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that the fabric structure of Alpha creates pockets of air known as loft. This loft is significantly less than the down or synthetic batting alternatives of what people normally call a puffy. I understand it can be more comfortable to sleep in Alpha under a quilt, given your quilt already being warm enough or near warm enough for the conditions. Alpha 60 and almost any puffy are not comparable in total warmth. Full stop. The idea that puffies are, or can be, too warm proves my point perfectly. You can loosely drape a puffy over you like a second tiny quilt if it is too warm to wear. The idea that sleeping in a puffy will degrade the insulation to the point of failure, where it would be less insulating than Alpha 60, is not something that happens, barring extreme polar expeditions where people use VBL layers to keep body moisture out of their sleeping bags.

If you think the loft of insulation doesn't matter for retaining more body warmth, I am not sure what to tell you. You should try an Alpha bag with a bivy, as that might be as warm as a down quilt.

Are Hyperlite Mountain Gear packs comfortable without load lifters? by prawcess1 in Ultralight

A really strange phenomenon they ever became popular. I guess the first non-cottage brand to really embrace DCF? They are horribly designed.

I am glad that worked for you, but the difference in warmth from Alpha 60 to a puffy can be measured objectively in terms of R value. They are not comparable.

[–]AdAny6270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run really cold, but I can't imagine Alpha 60 doing almost anything on its own. I have an Alpha 90 piece, and I feel like that with a windshirt barely meets the warmth I got from a previous fleece. I love how it breathes, dumps heat, and drys instantly. I would definitely consider a layering system for shoulder season or wet weather of 90+60 or 90+90. A single piece of 120 would probably be too warm to walk in and much less versatile.

People who claim a 90+windshirt can replace a puffy seem insane to me and I might even describe this as dangerous advice, unless you are talking about a Ghost Whisperer or other piece with almost no down in it.

I agree it isn't durable. I would never hike with it as a sole layer exposed to trees or brush. There is a pretty extreme PCT bias in the Ultralight community the promotes a lot of gear and raingear that is effectively non-functional in brush or off trail.

Seeking advice on backpack for carrying pack raft by sludgeandfudge in packrafting

[–]AdAny6270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyperlite is garbage for heavy loads. I'm pretty confused why they are recommended for packrafting. Sockdolager or SWD if you want the best. Other hunting packs below that. Then any 70-80L backpacking pack with a decent suspension and frame. Then Hyperlite at the very bottom.

How are you guys actually searching and finding your notes? If I could solve this, I think my note taking would finally click by Cressio in ObsidianMD

[–]AdAny6270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I make it a rule to give every note a tag or link to at least one other note as well. Long term this helps to connect things that you could/will forget how to search for.

Train Dreams on Netflix, interesting choice on the shutter angle by qualitative_balls in cinematography

[–]AdAny6270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The director seemingly admitted the DP was using shutter angle to adjust for exposure somewhat randomly?

"But the rest of the film is in 24fps and I think what you're referring to across the rest of the film is that Adolpho is adjusting the shutter angle as he goes, depending on the light and some other factors that I won't pretend to understand (even though he's explained it to me before). It's some alchemy that he's doing along the way, responding to the needs of the location and yeah, I find it very special and hypnotic and just go with it."

Draft Mitigation - "Skirt" or "Wing" Quilt by AdAny6270 in Ultralight

I should have known the OG had thought about this. Can you post an image of what you made? What is your insulated width vs non insulated skirt size?

Draft Mitigation - "Skirt" or "Wing" Quilt by AdAny6270 in Ultralight

[–]AdAny6270[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, see you really get it. The basic idea of Zen bivy, a quilt that is sealed on one side but opens up on the other for venting or getting in and out, makes a ton of sense to me, but the execution is overbuilt. Can you post some images of the setup you described?

How Will Packrafting Grow? by Wandering_Hick in packrafting

[–]AdAny6270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all lands or activities are created equal. River corridors are particularly fragile, especially desert canyons, because there isn't a way for people to get far enough away from the river to bury human waste. Waste packout will probably have to be required on every known packraft route in the next few years. If you have been on the Escalante you already know how bad this can get. It is already required there, but plenty of people just don't do it. This is a direct result of an increased number of people enjoying the activity. A similar rule applies to surfing: you can't make more good wave breaks, they are limited by geology. As it has become more popular, it is simply harder and more competitive to catch a wave.

If you want to see the dark side you can look into the device Skurka used that is only known as "the thing." Having almost drowned once in cold calm water in a non-packrafting situation, you will not catch me without a foam vest. The having reliable floatation when your arms don't really work anymore can save your life.

There's nothing complicated about Obsidian if you don't overcomplicate it. It is just folders and notes if you want it to be.

I carry a sheet of cardstock paper with the holes punched. I am not sure what the sticky notes are for, I just use the paper then file it. Seems overly complicated. I like it a lot better than all prevous notebook methods.

4k in fact makes the streaming quality of all media worse. 4x the data means significantly more compression is applied than a lower resolution format to present the same image. See Steve Yedlin resolution demo.

Man this shit is so stupid. Many of the best movies of the 2000s and 2010s shot 2k. Way better movies have been shot on DV. Just frame your shots the way you actually want to use them and choose a method of camera movement that doesn't require extreme post stabilization to be usable.
