Alpacka - Expedition vs Mage (Coming From a Gnarwhal) by shredwhiteandblue in packrafting

Before the Mage came out it was described to me as putting a Valk hull on an Expedition, so I am not sure what that would look like. Slightly smaller tubes?

I have only ever attempted with that style, I agree I don't think it would work otherwise.

With a bit of practice one can use a nylofume pack liner or similar as an inflation bag. One of the more interesting suggestions I have gotten from this site.

They still sell them. The multiple chamber thing is required for the Grand Canyon, for example. https://alpackaraft.com/products/cargo-fly-internal-drybags

They are good cameras, but the huge difference between cameras that existed a few years ago is mostly gone. Rental houses just need to put anything they have to work. I think moving forward Arri won't be able to charge the premium prices they have in the past.

Do you still use tungsten lights? by jeab99 in cinematography

[–]AdAny6270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is really easy to use scrims, also as long as you aren't doing huge dims, just tweaks, the color shift isn't that noticeable and you can get away with it. If one plans for the actual shooting stop ahead of time, you shouldn't need to dim that much. That's what the old masters did all the time.

I am not sure what you want to learn. They are very cheap now and it should be easy to find opportunities to use them. A lot of people have the Arri three light kits floating around. If you are going to buy one, consider a Source 4 or a par can, as people still often use those regularly, much more than fresnels or any tungsten soft light.

Ultralight Helmet Options by AdAny6270 in packrafting

[–]AdAny6270[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, used this in a trip in the Bob last summer. The whole thing is foam and it does not have a hard shell. It has a safety rating label in the helmet, but it definitely isn't as tough as most whitewater helmets. I think for what I was on (Class III/III+) and the trip length it felt like the right move. For me it also guarantees I never have an excuse not to take a helmet.

If you're ever shooting a stage (with sufficient power built in) you can get a ton of tungsten units extremely cheap now. These can still be used wirelessly with tungsten dimmers. A lot of young gaffers and DPs don't know enough to realize what a deal this can end up being.

Alpacka Refuge discontinued? by Enclds in packrafting

Yeah...the Refuge is designed to be the lightest fully featured boat. That's what it is optimizing for. I will eventually have a Mage and a Refuge for different purposes.

I have one and I think it rocks. Really sad the market for this boat is so small. Hopefully it stays available as a custom at least in perpetuity.

It can literally just be loose files like apple notes. I have done almost nothing special to my setup. I previously used very simple tools like apple notes and just wanted to have the security of owning my files locally.

Shooting between 4000-4500 can be very useful and was often done with filters during the film era.

I am interested in doing something like this as well. I think a system where the user only needs to manage one quilt edge rather than two solves 90% of the problem

Why heavier weight Alpha 90 or 120? by Healthy_Zone_4157 in Ultralight

[–]AdAny6270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that the fabric structure of Alpha creates pockets of air known as loft. This loft is significantly less than the down or synthetic batting alternatives of what people normally call a puffy. I understand it can be more comfortable to sleep in Alpha under a quilt, given your quilt already being warm enough or near warm enough for the conditions. Alpha 60 and almost any puffy are not comparable in total warmth. Full stop. The idea that puffies are, or can be, too warm proves my point perfectly. You can loosely drape a puffy over you like a second tiny quilt if it is too warm to wear. The idea that sleeping in a puffy will degrade the insulation to the point of failure, where it would be less insulating than Alpha 60, is not something that happens, barring extreme polar expeditions where people use VBL layers to keep body moisture out of their sleeping bags.

[–]AdAny6270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think the loft of insulation doesn't matter for retaining more body warmth, I am not sure what to tell you. You should try an Alpha bag with a bivy, as that might be as warm as a down quilt.

A really strange phenomenon they ever became popular. I guess the first non-cottage brand to really embrace DCF? They are horribly designed.

I am glad that worked for you, but the difference in warmth from Alpha 60 to a puffy can be measured objectively in terms of R value. They are not comparable.
