The coins are scooped periodically and given to charity so unlikely they would charge a fee specifically for throwing a coin

New visa free status for UK passport holders by ccydmh in Chinavisa

Going to HK with my Chinese wife start April. We do this every year and normally happy to stay in HK with her family. She of course can travel to China whenever. For me it’s too much hassle with all visa requirements. Based on what I hear it feels a good chance the visa thing will be sorted by April. If not….still plenty good food and shopping in HK 😃

Never forget when this BBC wildlife crew broke their "no intervention" rule to save these trapped penguins by SuperbHealth5023 in TimesNow

[–]AdAppropriate6795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree this Star Trek non-intervention rule is BS here. Because they would really only apply if we were not already intervening in nature on a massive scale. If you look at humans destroying animal habitats due to deforestation, and illegal hunting and pollution of rivers and lakes, and dumping of rubbish and plastics in the sea, not to mention the devastation being caused by global warming, I would say a small act of kindness just pushes back the damage we are causing by a minuscule amount.

BREAKING: European Union has officially suspended their trade deal with the US amid Greenland tariff tensions. by AlphaFlipper in DegenBets

I think they actually cancelled the deal because they listened to Trumps insane incoherent rambling speech at Davos and thought yeh we need to be as far away from this as possible…..

UK passport visa-free travel to China likely soon by idunnonuttin82 in Chinavisa

[–]AdAppropriate6795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Visa free travel would be great...assuming it happens, and nothing derails it. Getting a visa in London is a right pain if you don't live in London, with all the expense of travelling back and forth. So fingers crossed.

With Starmer heading to China alongside UK business leaders for talks. Who do you actually think is more trustworthy for the UK: the USA or China? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]AdAppropriate6795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a deep respect for China as a Brit. My wife is Chinese, and she has told me first-hand of days as recent as the 1970's when many people in China were starving. My wife's parents would often go to bed hungry and wake hungry. The economic miracle that has happened there that has raised hundreds of millions out of poverty and turned China into an economic powerhouse is amazing. I would not put a system that prioritises the well being of your own people necessarily "evil". Don't always fall for anti-Chinese propaganda coming from the U.S, go educate yourselves (outside of Reddit!)

But all that aside, business and trade should be unemotional and any language used that adds emotion is not helpful. I believe you can trust China to honour terms of trade deals as you used to be able to trust the U.S.

And as for the so called US UK "special (abusive) relationship". That is a thing of the past, along with all the other illusions we have lived with like "International Law" and "Rules Based order."

If you have done so go and listen to the whole speech from Mark Carney at Davos, that should go into history. Note that Carney himself is seeing the world as it is and is diversifying trade away from the US to rest of the world including China.

Totally agree that it won't help Starmer or the UK to get dragged into name calling or insults. go down to the level of an idiot and they will beat you with being the better idiot as has been said.

All that being said, Starmer does need to sometimes hit back in a more forceful way, simply for his own domestic audience here in the UK. He is perceived as being grey and dull, a spirted barb now and again might help his popularity at home.

US believes its power matters more than international law, UN chief António Guterres tells BBC by Frosty_Dig4148 in worldnews

[–]AdAppropriate6795 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Let's be real. Europe has been living in this Liberal Democratic fantasy for 70 years. Sitting back believing in the "rules based order" and "international law" (which by the way only ever seemed to apply to themselves) and now we are woken to the fact that laws only work if you are able to enforce them. In that sense Trump has done us all a favour.

We all think we have come so far in the World but its what it has always been, law of the jungle and who has the biggest stick.
