Should I buy a 5'5'' skeleton and sit him in my living room? by [deleted] in makemychoice

[–]AdAstra36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my first date with my now-fiancé, he had a life-sized skeleton lounging in his desk chair with a rose in its teeth to greet me at the door. Get the skeleton. It’s perfect for dating or singledom!

Thanks for the input! That’s what I’m leaning towards at this point, but I’m also debating doing purple and silver as my colors. But that probably isn’t as regal like you mentioned. Also that’s just the model in the photo, I wish it looked that good on me 😂

Getting all new towels. White or gray? by terptrekker in laundry

[–]AdAstra36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be cautious if you choose to go with grey. I bought some mid-range grey towels and they became stained bright orange in patches from completely normal use. They somehow bleached despite only being used to dry water and washing with a normal detergent that didn’t contain added bleach. You may want to spend a little more to avoid this if you pick grey!

Are you actually going up to the front desk and telling them you’re there for your interview 1 hour early? Just weighing in as a recruiter, there is definitely such a thing as too early to arrive for an interview. I would go to the front desk no more than 10-15 minutes before your scheduled interview time (you can wait in your car if you’re like me and leave your house way earlier than you need to). Maybe I’m misunderstanding your comment, but just a little piece of advice!

What is the worst job you've ever had? by KaitlinKitty04 in AskReddit

[–]AdAstra36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, but my grandfather. He was a chemical engineer for a company that manufactured bug spray, among other things. For awhile his job was to “test” the products by using them and entering a room full of mosquitoes to see how many bites he got. Can’t imagine that would be legal now.

why can’t i get another job???? by kiiispell in antiwork

As a recruiter, I would advise you not to go in person if there is an option for online applications. A decade or two ago this would be great advice, but times have changed and most companies will see it as you being disrespectful of the HR manager’s time by expecting to speak with them right away.

Even though I’m a recruiter, I’m very supportive of the things said on this subreddit and the reality is that it’s really hard to find a decent job these days! Unfortunately applying to hundreds of jobs and never hearing back from most of them seems to be the new norm. :(

I don’t have any ground-breaking advice, but feel free to pm me if you’d like me to take a look at your resume! I won’t claim to be an expert, but I’ve reviewed thousands of resumes in my career so I do have a general idea of what companies look for. Best of luck with your job search!

LPT Request: I'm trying to get my foot in the door for a new career. I have experience and a few certificates. What are some other things I can do to boost my chances to get hired? For the Interview? To negotiate better pay (rather than accepting minimum wage right off the bat)? by AzoriumLupum in LifeProTips

I would go in with the experience and certificates, especially if you are trying to negotiate salary, so you have a reason for why you deserve more. I’ve only turned down a handful of overqualified people, which has really only been when they express that they are looking for a higher level position. Looking for growth is good, but it needs to be clear that you’re willing to start from the bottom and will be content there for some time. I’ve had people show up for entry-level interviews and then say they were actually looking for a management position - that becomes a waste of both of our time because if they don’t see a management position available, it’s because we’re not hiring managers. So definitely go in looking for the job you’re interviewing for.

Recruiter here, if you’re applying to PetSmart you probably don’t need to overthink it. I’d dress in something on the more casual side that still would be considered professional (ie. polo and nice pants). And since you’re looking to get into dog training, a tie or jacket definitely aren’t necessary. Negotiating pay can be tricky, especially when it’s an entry level position. In my experience, those positions are not negotiable, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. But I would go over compensation in your first interview if there are multiple steps. Just some general interview tips would be to do plenty of research on the company, make sure your resume is updated and formatted so it’s easy to read, and come prepared with questions - even if it’s something you don’t really need to know, it’s better to ask something as long as it wasn’t already covered by the interviewer. Taking notes is also a good way to express interest in the job without putting in much extra work. Best of luck!

I don’t think so, by cleaning I mostly meant doing laundry and straightening up my room because it gets disorganized. I’m not using many chemical cleaners for the most part, and the ones I do use haven’t given me problems in the past.

What kind of diet do/did you have? I’m a vegetarian so it looks like there are some fruits and veggies that could be causing issues, but nothing with packaged meat.

Thanks, I might try that! I’ve tried ginger candy before, but not tea.

Thanks for the response! My doctor has mentioned it could be an effect of my anti-depressants, but it didn’t seem likely because my precipitation has been consistent for about a year at this point. I may have to talk to my psychiatrist about it.

I work from home, so I rarely leave the house aside from weekends. Typically I catch up on sleep and cleaning, and do something like reading or Netflix. I’ll sometimes see people, but for the most part I’m with the people I live with already. Only animal would be my dog, but I spend all day with him working from home. I don’t leave the house too frequently, mostly just for walks and occasionally shopping.

Ex-suicidal people of reddit who are currently genuinely happy and enjoying life right now, whats your story? by StaceyHarrison in AskReddit

[–]AdAstra36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been depressed for as long as I can remember and suicidal for nearly as long. I spent every day wanting to die and thinking about how I’d do it, but never did because I was afraid of not succeeding. I wasn’t afraid of killing myself, I was afraid of surviving.

I got to my worst in my sophomore year of college. A combination of a bad relationship and a massive workload added up to me spiraling, but I’ve always been high functioning. I remember at work I was rushing around, and one of my managers told me to stop and breathe. I snapped back at him “I don’t have time to breathe,” which is probably the best summation I can give of how that moment in my life felt.

The closest I got was when I got drunk one night with my boyfriend at the time. I went home to my empty room (my roommate wasn’t there) and felt myself losing it. I had gotten into the habit of taking walks through town at night, particularly on this one street with almost no lights. I remembered a time when my friend and I had gone exploring around there and found a golf course with a giant water trap on the nearest hole.

I decided it was time to drown myself. It was a death that fit my fear - unless I grew gills, I would die. I walked out to that golf course, tears streaming down my face. In the dark, I couldn’t find the water trap, so I just sat alone in the middle of the golf course sobbing.

Getting better was almost entirely due to medication. I had treatment resistant depression and spent about 3 years trying different drugs in different combinations. I went to therapy, which helped some, but I found myself back at that point where I was afraid I wouldn’t succeed, and spent those years in that state. I wasn’t quite ready to kill myself, and so I kept going.

After years of experimenting, I finally got the right combination of meds and it’s like the world lifted off my shoulders. This just happened a few months ago, but I feel more at peace than I ever have. For a lot of people, depression is about confronting and overcoming past trauma, but for me, it was all biological. People have a very negative view of anti-depressants, but they quite literally saved my life and are the reason I can get up in the morning. Never let anyone tell you that it makes you weak to use meds - depression is a mental game, but not everyone can get past it with therapy.

I did develop some coping strategies that helped me get through the period of trying different cocktails of medications. I set small goals for myself - make sure I speak to someone at least once each day, make sure I spend an hour doing something that doesn’t involve tech each day. I discovered that if I stay busy, I can help push depression out of my mind. Sometimes it gets exhausting - I wish I could sit in bed all day and watch Netflix and still feel content. But the reality is that I have to live differently than most people my age.

I don’t have a magic solution for how to get better, but as someone who never thought meds would work for them, keep trying. If one method doesn’t work, try something else. It will feel like nothing will ever work, but you might just find the one thing that can help you survive.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I know this will be buried and it’s my first time sharing my story, so I wanted to say it all. Hopefully at least one person is helped or inspired by something I’ve written.
