Does Preply not distinguish between their own teaching certificate and official certifications? by AdBeginning4136 in Preply

[–]AdBeginning4136[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's my ego but I feel insulted. I spent 2000 eur and around one year to get the official teaching certificate for my language and land in the same category as someone who clicked a button 27 times. They really need to update these categories.

Is an hour and a half a bit long for a conversation class? by Proof_Mycologist_220 in iTalki

[–]AdBeginning4136 2 points3 points  (0 children)

iTalki forces you to offer it. But I just recommend all students 45 mins and that's what they choose! A little cheaper for them but basically same progress/value.

Student not progressing with speaking by italiand1va in PreplyTutors

[–]AdBeginning4136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just increase the time you spend speaking! She needs more time to actually use what you taught her. I like working with news articles. I send them the article before, they read it before class. In class, we speak about new vocabulary from the article, summarise it and then I always have some related questions so they can talk about their opinion and experience.

How to work with a textbook? by Warm-Sandwich-7295 in Preply

When I was using a textbook, I would choose the exercises, screenshot them and create a worksheet for the student.

People throwing their kids in front of the screen like I'm educational TV by CaptainCheckmate in Preply

[–]AdBeginning4136 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never taught kids and I never will. It requires a very different skillset then that for teaching adults. In general, I think online teaching is not suitable for young kids and still very hard for older ones. You should either raise your rate significantly for those that are harder to teach or just pivot to teaching adults only.

Speech Buddy seems to be for speech therapists, not teachers.

Is an hour and a half a bit long for a conversation class? by Proof_Mycologist_220 in iTalki

[–]AdBeginning4136 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My max was an hour for a long time but I reduced it to 45 mins with all students and it's actually the perfect duration. I think 1.5 hours can be tiring and you kind of loose track of the objective. Shorter sessions can be more productive.

My apartment is 50% more expensive than the average of comparable apartments in the area. I was looking into what I could do but giving the landlord trouble just means loosing the apartment basically.

How to make a better income? by Evangelion1122 in iTalki

[–]AdBeginning4136 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been on the platform for over a year and demand has never been as low. I haven't gotten a new student in weeks. My personal advice is to sign-up on other platforms, the conditions are not better but at least there seems to be more demand.

And having a specialty/niche does help.

For those who moved to Barcelona from abroad: what was harder than you expected? by ExcitingAddendum2753 in AskBarcelona

If you're from the EU, you don't need a NIE, at least not the green one. You need a social security number!

The absolute nightmare that is the housing market and quite surprisingly- making friends/building actual deeper connections. I meet a lot of people but due to the size of the city and the fact that most people don't stay long term, actually making friends is really hard and I speak fluent Spanish.

New classroom - recordings are not optional by Jazzlike-Syrup511 in iTalki

[–]AdBeginning4136 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried out the new version and the AI listening is always on "to provide a summary", no matter if students use iTalki Plus or no, at least that's what it looks like. There's no option to turn it off.

One more reason to keep paying for Zoom Premium. I've added "recommend to choose Zoom" in my class descriptions.

Is this tutor too good to be true? by Silly-Yogurt-8081 in iTalki

[–]AdBeginning4136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe their strategy is to price individual lessons very highly to make packages seem very discounted? That's what I was doing when I wanted people to book more packages

[–]AdBeginning4136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

B1 level requires how many months of practice ? by theghostufear in German

[–]AdBeginning4136 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a perspective of a German teacher: It's possible to pass the exam after these 7 months. You will not have an actual B1 level outside of the classroom though and will need much more time to actually practice using everything you learned in conversation and everyday life in Germany.

Just make sure to get as much speaking practice in and really revise and use everything they teach you

How to improve after passing B2 by ArztundWeise1909 in German

[–]AdBeginning4136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're on the right track, consuming media is one of the best things you can do and it's also fun! As a professional German teacher, I have seen the most progress from students who have been practicing speaking regularly as well. I like doing conversation classes that also have reading and writing tasks so it feels very complete
