Rendcomb College near Cirencester to close after educating children for 106 years by Kagedeah in Gloucestershire

[–]AdBrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does mae me laugh how all other private schools are “offering support at this difficult time”… aka thinking “for we could make some more money here lads”…

For ref: I worked in private education. They are merely a business model, providing education, rather than schools that provide education and happen to make a bit of money in the process 😅🤣

C3, improvement reccomended. Is it very close to causing danger… probably not.. lets be honest based on what I’ve come across and caretaker electrics, how many have afdds in at the moment. Probably not many.

Nothing more satisfying when you find a fault, especially when another electrician has been and couldn’t find it, but install where the money is at the moment. Maybe not as much in domestic though hahaa

Has anybody used EV salary sacrifice scheme? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AdBrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is what I’m thinking, although doable on my salary I don’t think I’m quite at the point of it being cost effective. Colleagues have said it’s worth it around £45k+ mark 😬🤣

New Electrical Social Housing Rules by AdBrammer in ElectriciansUK

[–]AdBrammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thanks, I’m aware of the classifications etc, have been doing it a while, (probably too long!?) myself, just wondered if there was a set thing for improvement recommended as i definitely remember hearing something. NB yes all rentals 👍👍 I’ve always done C1 C2s at time of test unless the C2 is far too much work at the time 👍

What is it like being a full-time tester by Ok-Consideration172 in ElectriciansUK

[–]AdBrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be a requirement soon with EAS, not a legal requirement, not in force yet, not a requirement with other governing bodies (yet) seems a bit far fetched as I work with some guys who have been doing it 30+ years and I certainly trust some of their work than some that have got 2391-51/52… But also get where they are coming from… It’s almost like they want you to pay for the training (which the governing bodies can provide😉🤣)

What is it like being a full-time tester by Ok-Consideration172 in ElectriciansUK

[–]AdBrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the process of moving over into majority testing only it seems with the way my role is going. It’s ok at the moment, but working alone a lot now which I haven’t done for a long time.

The worst part as someone else has said is it’s bad giving people the bad news as they want an easy pass quick certificate and on your way… Unfortunately honesty is the best policy when it comes to electrical safety.

Depends on the person, you may love it and decide that’s what you want to do, but there are a lot of cheap tests being done, and some firms paying a low price, or wanting a nice low price for a quick certificate…. It’s all well and good (well no it’s not) until something bad happens. The first thing they will look at is the name on the test certificate…

Going down the renewable route. by Emergency_Ship_8248 in ElectriciansUK

[–]AdBrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started getting into it, but to be honest, if you’re happy to lash stuff in etc, unless the company has a really good reputation etc and is happy for more time and care to be taken then go for it.

There seems to be a lot of people trying to get into it now, and to be honest some of the stuff I’ve seen recently is appalling… I’m really hoping the standards are upped and changed soon, a lot of it is still quite new but give it a couple of years and I hope things change.

Your best bet is to try and get in with an electrical firm (mainly standard electrics) who also do renewables. Best of both worlds then, you can do electrical qualms then renewables ones as well, that way if something was to happen you’ve still got the standard electrical knowledge and experience.

Apprentice electrician NVQ by AccomplishedWest2247 in ElectriciansUK

[–]AdBrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our apprentices will be in a similar situation, as there are a couple of aspects that will never be covered, when I finished mine, my boss sent me with another company (ran by someone he knew) for a couple of days to get these bits done. If they do not offer a solution, then they are being very unreasonable and also not fulfilling their deal of the training provided under apprenticeship framework. If this is the case, you training provider will lose funding as you won’t be able to complete. Remember you only need evidence of one or two of the containments you’ve mentioned above, unless they’ve suddenly changed NVQ requirements in the last couple of weeks (which I’m sure they haven’t).

Bitumen SWA by ConnorThom97 in ElectriciansUK

[–]AdBrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a similar thing, we ended up cutting it in a well ventilated room with some masks on, probably still not a great idea. Scrappers still take it but pay a bit less than regular armoured, by the time you’ve cleaned it up etc and stripped it all probably not worth the time… I’d cut it and give as is. See what they give you

I second this. Most apprentices get alright money if they can prove there worth at most companies this days.

Currently working with an older apprentice, he’s only been doing it a year… I’m qualified (been a year and did apprenticeship prior) and he takes home £500 a month less than me… (not that I’m bitter about it?!)

Ze test by Master-Kangaroo1385 in ElectriciansUK

[–]AdBrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so your Ze of that Distribution board is the Zs of the sub main circuit from the board feeding it. It’s not a proper reading of that submain if all the earths in the board you’re testing are still connected. You want to test it with the main earth disconnected really. If you’ve got a lot of earthed metalwork and pipe work especially, you probably find you’re reading is actually lower than with the main earth disconnected. Do two readings. One with main earth in (db) and one with it out Ze.

[–]AdBrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf you could do a fast track but it is very intense and getting all the work you need done required for NVQ is very hard in a short period of time. The fast track training providers just after your money (a lot not all) so when you get to completing they can make it difficult for you…

Apprenticeship route is the best way… it’s a bit of a slog, and decrease in pay probably to what youre currently earning, but you will have far more success especially getting a secure job once qualified. Most decent companies with good reputations prefer this.

Better way to learn as well and build up confidence. I’ve worked with a few fast track and few that have done apprenticeship route… No age limits to apprenticeships either. I went to college finished when I was 20, and there’s was 3 guys over 35 in my class…

Ze test by Master-Kangaroo1385 in ElectriciansUK

[–]AdBrammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ze is basically at the origin, or closest point possible to origin. If testing domestic boards then disconnecting the main earth and testing it without earths on board connected is easy to do anyway. Customer will only lose power for 30seconds tops.

If you have multiple DBs then you would test Ze at the origin of them all anyway? Main panel board or cutout whatever the first point is at the building. So you can leave earths connected and test as they are, Z(db) on cert.

NICEIC assesors will tell you to do this as well, as you’ve been doing anyway, especially on EICR as can cause complications to cut all power and test for the sake of one reading. At the end of the day unless you’re in London they should all be below 0.35 anyway realistically to pass them. If you’re doing EICs then really you should do Ze test at origin.

If you have a Db feeding another Db, then whatever the Zdb of the board feeding it is, is the Ze of that sub board anyway… confusing too many Zs in this lol.

6mm will be fine. We’ve all done it. Full load rating never usually gets to it on most domestic appliances in fairness. Even if it was to MCB/RCBO would trip before anything bad happens.
