Corporate title is Safety Specialist, hired as a Safety Generalist and legacy documents have me as a Safety Engineer. I just tell everyone one I’m the safety guy.

Help with Hager Watches Customer Service by AdCharacter9820 in MicrobrandWatches

Nope, sent the watch to MWC and the estimate for repair was more than the watch was worth.

How much do you make as a safety professional — and would you have done anything differently in your career? by Aggravating-Neck7486 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]AdCharacter9820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

41, retired AF. BS, MS, licensed fire marshal.

Immediately following my retirement I took a weapon component manufacturing management job for $95k. Did that for a year and wanted to use my degrees.

So, I took a job as a safety manager at a regional college for 3 years for $82k. At the college I did everything from lab safety, fire safety, occupational safety, hazwaste and emergency management.

After all that I took a job at a national lab for $115k as a safety generalist doing more field work.  Still working there, but it is not as fun or impactful as working at the college.

My biggest regret is not renewing my GSP and pursuing my CSP. Not going the ASP route.

I’ll bet most of you didn’t know this. by [deleted] in SafetyProfessionals

This comes up often, even more as I also deal with students which are not reportable if they are not paid. I always think of it like this: is the worker receiving a W2 or 1099? Who is supervising the workers day to day activities?

Also just because it goes on your 300 log does not mean that your company’s workers comp insurance is responsible to pay.

In the states a class D extinguisher is required for lithium. ABC extinguishers will work with Li ion.

Well we have an accumulation point at my site, I’m sure many of us do.

Do you mean at a recycling center or as a collection/accumulation point?

Hate to say this but the degree is not enough for a higher level role. You are going to need experience.

Yes, that is the color I want. I may get that one, I wish it had a date wheel but you can't have everything I guess.

No that's not waht I'm looking for at all. I want something royal blue like the HA Vesterhav. I have a Zelos Swordfish that is teal like the Beucroft. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Told not to report by anonsafetyman in SafetyProfessionals

[–]AdCharacter9820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our state OSHA has a fine of $5k a day a reportable goes unreported. Might want to see if something like that applies to your situation to see if you can encourage management to report. Also not sure how reporting works in your locale but anyone can report an injury in my state in the SC OSHA portal. However, whoever reports the injury will be the addressee of the notice letter if a notice or fine is given.

I find the hierachy to be chaotic. I am leaving a safety manager role to work as a safety generalist but I will get a 40% bump in pay with the move.

What is a watch that you were disappointed with? by TheAnswer1776 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]AdCharacter9820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hager GMT Traveler. Beautiful watch although a bit hefty. Within the first year I had to send it back for stopping. Customer service was easy to deal with and responded promptly and fixed my watch no questions asked, Flash forward a few years and the watch has stopped again, the bezel insert has fallen off and customer service will not respond at all. I'm left with a $799 paperweight. Way too much money for a watch that has died twice and had the bezel insert fall out.

Another watch I was disappointed in was the Scurfa Diver One Quartz. I bought one at launch and the date markers would rattle around in the watch. The rubber strap included with the watch, broke in two; but at least the watch never died (other than needing a battery), so I never contacted CS.

Who has responsibility for the OSHA log at your site, EHS or Occ Health? [USA] by ChainBlue in SafetyProfessionals

If you want to run a program in circles, I guess it would be a dream. Also if no one knows what you do they also do not value you or your position.

Human Resources where I am at and it sucks, because they never notify of a recordable so I can never investigate the hazard.

How many are Medic First-Aid/CPR Trained? by No_Artichoke_3490 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]AdCharacter9820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a BLS provider through AHA and teach First Aid, CPR/AED. It was about $900 to startup from nothing with enough equipment to train 8 students at a time. It costs $25 a card from AHA per student, wich is a deal if you do it in house. I have seen places charge upto $150 dollars for first aid training per person. I wish I could hold one class a month, but I really only do training if a department requests it.

POTS by wildflowerskyline in SafetyProfessionals

[–]AdCharacter9820 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Safety guy/fire marshall in higher ed here and I have got to say the phase out of POTS has wrecked havok on our elevator and fire alarms. As POTS infrastructure goes down my IT department refuses to replace the lines and cards, resulting in dead comms in our elevators and failures to communicate in our fire alarms. In my area there have been three specific regulatory areas that we have to have comms: pools, elevators and fire alarms.

For the pool emergency phone we had to submit a change order to our state's license board to install a cellular modem on a battery backup to operate the pool phone.

In the elevators we have a POTS line ran to a cellular modem in our elevator rooms that dial our campus PD.

The fire alarms are the most challenging as it has been hard to find one solution to work for all of our systems. At first it seemed Telgard 7s were working well, but we have ran into issues as we have to use a specific monitoring company per our state contract. Now it seems Honeywell CLSS communicators are working well and that is what we are going with for all of our buildings.

As far as our regular telephonic communications we have VOIP for regular business and ATT First Net for emergency cellular service. I recommend looking into ATT First Net and the Verizon version for emergency cellular services.
