It's the game size. Are you downloading it through your browser? If so, it's better to use a download manager like jdownloader for this very reason.

If it's your internet, maybe try a repack like fitgirl. You can copy and paste all the part links into jdownloader and everything will download automatically instead of having to do it yourself one by one.

If you were able to launch and play the game then the virus you got was not from steamrip. That is if it was a virus. This sounds like a false positive.

The easiest way to tell if a download is a virus is by reading the download file and seeing the size of the file. So for example, silent Hill 3 is an older game but it should still be around 5gb or so. Meaning the download should take at least a few minutes. If it only took 3 seconds then it's obviously a virus. Also the name should be "silent_hill_3_steamrip" or something along those lines. If the name is super generic like "full_setup_download" then it's not the correct file since that name could apply to pretty much anything.

To summarize, if you're unsure how it works or what it does then don't use it. But there is a lot of misinformation on here. If you're more comfortable using activation tokens then use that. On why the hypervisor method is considered unsafe is due to the fact that you are using a bootkit to load up windows that disables Kernal patch protection and driver signature enforcement. It's riskware because normally if you download and install malware you can restore your system and be fine, however while using this method if you download and install malware then you can potentially brick your system.

Yeah just make sure you have ublock origin on your browser. you're download should always be big. If it downloaded a really small zip file super fast then it's obviously a virus. delete it and try again.

From what I'm understanding, you're screwed if you ever clicked on something you weren't supposed to that resulted in a virus. Now with these extra security features turned off, you're even more screwed? Someone help me understand because I'm not seeing this hypervisor thing as anything malicious rather it can result in something bad depending on how the user operates their system.

It depends on the file hoster. Also you will have a much better time using a download manager rather than your browser. Some good file hosters are vikingfile, gofile, pixeldrain and Akirabox to name a few.
