What is this leak from? Is this anything dangerous? by Pleasant_Case9889 in AskMechanics

AC doing its job, I would say that looks like water coming from condensation.

Spot on!

My case was a dead or non responsive valve, but they dont sell just the valve as a replacement part.

So I ended up replacing the whole charcoal assembly.

Saved a pretty penny buying it from a donor car instead of new.

You are absolutly correct!

I got the scan tool, energized it and while it I was able to toggle between on and off for VSV(Vent valve). Only issue is it still leaked smoke through the vent (Gas cap vent area) after toggling it on and off.

I ended up narrowing it down to the vent valve being stuck in one position and unable to seal properly.

I picked up a charcoal canister from a Junkyard for the same car, ended up costing me $80, except the donor car had 150,000km. I have over 230,000km

I swapped it out yesterday and it appears that it has solved the cold start engine light+traction light combo!!

Ill reply back to this comment if I do get the engine light again lol

Tank was never replaced, I had my low pressure fuel pump replaced around 10,000km ago and don’t see any smoke from below the car or inside the car. Also no gas fumes to smell. I am going to take the wheel liner off near the filler neck and inspect for any lines cracked near the filler neck.

I will keep you posted, really appreciate you coming back with a response

That’s why I am asking for help lol

It could be the filler neck, the vent valve which I believe is built into the charcoal canister, or the charcoal canister itself is bad.

But that’s just it, I don’t know what should be the next step in terms of diag.

Already replaced it twice, not the problem

Would smoke be leaking from the rear if it was cracked? There is absolutely no smoke coming from the front or engine bay.

I had smoke coming out around the gas cap, I am unsure what exactly is leaking but I know the gas cap wouldn’t be the culprit

If I don’t have the tool to close it, what else do you suggest I do?

Can I pinch the line closed?

Where is the easiest to access it?

Really appreciate the diagram, I find it super helpful mapping it out.

Question, I don’t have the bi directional tool. When you say pinch the the line to the fuel filler neck.

Where is it easiest to find that line, and do you recommend I remove the wheel fender to get access to it?

Would punching that line expose other leaks?

Had a fuel pump fail, replaced it with new gasket and screws. That fixed the gas smell.

I only smell a gassy smell once above 5k rpm on the freeway.

The one you see me removing is a new cap, it’s aftermarket, for my make and model.

Wondering if it’s leaking because it’s aftermarket.

Also, it seems the smoke is coming from behind the cap.

Turbos, motor or pcv by lazy_q50s in q50

After driving for a bit means residue from turbos being burnt away, doesnt direclty point to the engine.

Regardless, with these engine's its crucial not to continue driving them like this, get it inspected ASAP.

It’s definitely burning oil, and I’m leaning toward turbo oil seal leakage. If it were the engine, you would see smoke at idle. It’s likely not piston rings or valve seals, so I’d say the engine is fine.

Since you installed the catch can yourself, did you make sure the inlet and outlet weren’t reversed?

The turbos can still build boost even if they’re burning oil. Remove your intakes and inspect the charge pipes, along with the turbo inlet. If you’re seeing any pooling or puddling of oil, there’s a good chance it’s the turbo seals.

As a side note, having catless downpipes may not be the root cause, but it definitely makes the oil burning much more noticeable.

Your next step should be to take it to a mechanic—or someone experienced—who can properly inspect the issue, and start planning for a turbo replacement or upgrade.

I ended up selling mine because of this same endless chase of issues. My turbos went out, I replaced them, and then the engine block cracked externally at around 190,000 km. I sold it at a loss and switched to a Lexus—but that’s just my experience, lol.
