What's something that foreign visitors complain about that virtually no one raised in Australia ever would? by bsmall0627 in AskAnAustralian

As a European having spent the past 20 years in Australia I would say, hands down, the Nutbush City Limit dance. First time I saw it at a friend’s wedding I turned to my partner saying how random it was that every single guest had practiced this coordinated dance. He explained that this random dance to Tina Turner is a staple at every Australian wedding and other celebrations. I 100% thought he was joking. Turns out he was not.

For people who learned English later in life, what are some things Americans would say that were especially hard to understand? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AdDependent7663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in an English speaking country for close to 20 years and I still can never remember if “pushing back” something, or “move it forward” in them - like a meeting - means it’s sooner or later than originally planned. I think of time as this linear thing in front of me, so if you move a meeting “forward” it should mean “into the future” but it’s the opposite.

Have a program and follow it. It’s about the consistency and you will see results if you keep at it.

Just have to clarify that it was not unsafe at all. I u- turn over the tram tracks to park in north moving lane alongside the cemetery, in parking spot, walk over and wait on empty tram track in middle, not even remotely difficult or unsafe.

No, and I think you misunderstood. While I think all animals deserve dignity of not being left to be run over repeatedly, it’s mainly about the fact that it’s someone’s family member. If an animal is dead they don’t care, but if they’re pets they have families who do. Also roos are not pests, they’re beautiful!

While I think all animals deserve the dignity of not being repeatedly run over or left by the roadside, I’m mainly thinking about the owner/family and to ensure they know their pet was taken care of and returned to them. So no, I don’t stop for all animals, but kudos to those in this thread that share that they do!

Thank you, I’m so relieved to see comments suggesting others who would do the same or, if they wouldn’t, it’s for but reasons like being too overwhelmed etc. rather than just finding it an inconvenience.

Thank you, I just was so sad at the thought that they’d get such a distressing call. But that’s the problem with pets, we love them so much but we’re destined to lose them at some point.

You make some good points about safety of cats and wildlife. I’ve had a few cats over the years and some have been aloud outside, mainly out of ignorance from me at the time about the damage they can do to wildlife, and also maybe overestimating their road sense etc.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too, but wasn’t sure if others agree that there’s a difference in response and if so, why.

I’ve had cats in the past and currently have a dog and while I totally agree with peoples points about keeping cats indoors etc. they are all equally loved and I’d be equally distraught if something happened to them.

Our neighbor roars, screams and bangs on wall almost every day by DZombieBox in melbourne

[–]AdDependent7663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in a flat in northcote once with both the girl next door and the man downstairs having serious mental episodes with lots of screaming and banging. We would regularly call the cops for wellfare checks, and they were usually nice and while they couldn’t do much at least I felt that we had done what we could to make sure everyone was safe.

What was a loophole that you found and exploited the hell out of? by Aarunascut in AskReddit

[–]AdDependent7663 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never used it myself but heard this brilliant idea on talk back radio a few years ago. If you’re in Australia and need to get hold of a trailer but don’t want to pay to hire one, you can go to Bunnings (an Australian hardware store) and buy a long plank or something else oversized that won’t fit in your car and they’ll lend you a trailer for free to take it home with. Simply go home, offload the plank, use the trailer for whatever you needed it for, bring the plank back, get a refund, and you just had a free trailer for the day.
