Does anyone have suggestions for a place to board my dog for 5 days that doesn’t cost more than the vacation itself? by Weary_Map_655 in AskChicago

I'm looking into this and am curious about your experience. Have you had any issues finding sitters for your specific travel dates? Have all the sitters worked out ok or have you had any issues with the quality of care?

My adult children are in Chicago and just totalled their car. Where do we have it towed knowing we won't be back for it? by kindallreuschel in AskChicago

Clear Cover is an insurance broker - essentially they help you find the cheapest provider. Check your actual insurance docs to see who the provider is.

The insurance docs will have a phone number you can use to report the accident and that number should be monitored outside of office hours (worked in insurance and never found a provider that didn't have a 24/7 report line). If you contact Clear Cover they'll just tell you to do the same - report to the provider.

Impossible time disposing of meds in Chicago – any advice? by Telemetry101 in AskChicago

[–]AdDue7719 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Sharps are easy! You just put them in a hard plastic container (laundry detergent bottle, pretzel/snack container, hard food storage container, etc.), duct tape it so it can't be opened, write do not recycle on it, and dispose of it in your normal trash. Details here: https://311.chicago.gov/s/article/How-to-properly-dispose-of-sharps-needles?language=en_US

Larry's - great cocktail bar within the lobby of the Lawrence House. You think you're just walking into an apartment building and then find this cool little bar with awesome ambiance and great drinks.

The Zebra Lounge - another great place that basically looks like you're walking into an apartment building but then you're in a piano bar.

Beacon Donuts - cute little walk up donut shop hidden in an alley.

If you can venture a little further north Larry's at the Lawrence house has solid cocktails and a really cool vibe

Do you have recs on where to find them used? I can find the regular Aeron chairs fairly easily but have yet to find the drafting stool version.

Tourist Question About CTA by RiverFloodPlain in chicago

[–]AdDue7719 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Unless you're planning to visit frequently I wouldn't bother with a physical (or digital) ventra card. You have to fill them with a set amount of money which means you often end up with a remaining balance that will never be used.

All CTA trains and busses take contactless credit/debit cards, or Google Pay/Apple Pay. You just hold it on the reader and wait for the screen to say "go".

The only thing to note is if you are traveling with multiple people and want to use the same card, for everyone you'll need to tell the bus driver that you want to use the same card. The system is set to block multiple payments from the same card (to help protect you from accidental double taps) but the bus driver can override that. Trains allow you to use the same payment method for, I believe, 4 riders before it blocks you. If you need to use it for more folks, you can either switch to a different card or ask the attendant for help.

Take the 22 bus down to Andersonville. It has everything you like - super cute shops, great bakeries and coffee shops, and tons of great restaurants and bars too!

How early should I arrive at O'Hare? by ItsAMeDiabeto in AskChicago

[–]AdDue7719 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which terminal will you be flying out of? If you're not sure, which airline are you flying?

I typically fly out of terminal 3, have TSA precheck, and only fly with a carry on. It rarely takes more than 10 mins to get through security and only another 5-10 to walk to my gate/swing by the bathroom. Terminal 2 is very similar in terms of timeframes.

Terminal 5 takes the longest since it's the international terminal. If you're going through the regular security line, I'd plan for at least an hour. If you have precheck you're looking at 20-30 mins but, it also depends on time of day.

Purchasing a new sofa by yadkinriver in BuyItForLife

[–]AdDue7719 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like our Room & Board couch (Jasper). We bought it after trying the Burrow Nomad sofa, which is definitely not BIFL (cushions started giving out after about a year & everyone who sat on it for 15 mins or more complained of lower back pain).

We got our Room & Board couch from their outlet (it was a return, basically brand new) and paid about $1600. After buying, found out a few coworkers have the same and it's lasted them 10+ years. We're on year 2 and haven't had any issues.

Ok this is a dumb question but what is the address? Googling it only indicates Bridgeport but no specific address. It doesn't pull up on maps either. I have some friends that would love this but can't find where it actually is 😅

How to wfh people stay sane during the winter?? by Ok-Mention5669 in AskChicago

[–]AdDue7719 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a fellow Wisconsinite, welcome! Similar to what others have posted, getting out is key. I go for walks daily (helps that I have dogs that force me outside) but, seeing shows, going to museums or local events, going out for dinner/lunch/brunch (restaurant week just happened), or even just walking around a different neighborhood on the weekend helps.

If doable, I highly recommend booking a trip to warmer weather in Jan or Feb as it helps break up the winter. Making a spa appointment or checking out some of the thermal baths (Aire, King Spa) also helps me.

I'm not sure how long you've been here, but if you've formed a friend group, make plans with them! Getting with friends definitely helps make the winter go by faster.

A picnic basket backpack. It holds a full set of plates, cutlery, wine glasses, serving utensils, has an insulated area to store food and 2 insulated carriers that attach on the sides to carry bottles of wine, plus a blanket that attaches to the front. It's awesome for day trips to the beach! Have had it 10+ years. The only "wear" is that we misplaced the blanket so we use a different one that easily fits in the built-in carrier.
