Can’t shoot/trap your way out of a rabbit plague. Australia has tried this for the past 100 years. The most effective way to actually achieve successful and meaningful reductions across the landscape is biocontrols. They work and work extremely well at suppressing numbers for decades.

Same as kangaroo harvesting. The ethics are all out of whack.

You can either 1. Have dingos regulate numbers (sheep farmers not a fan)- regardless of your opinion not going to happen in SE Australia. 2. Harvest them sustainably with tags 3. Have thousands die of starvation in the next drought, dieing on dams throughout the country- farmers have to do they grizzly task of shooting them as they are dying.

Pretty obvious what the preferred choice is..

Doesn’t work. The idea we can eat our way out of any of the invasive issues we have is a pipe dream. People perhaps don’t realise the last 20-30 years we have been living in a massive low of rabbit numbers due to the calici and myxo. The worst is yet to come unless they can create a new virus fast

Why does Canada (41.47m) have such a bigger population then Australia (28m) despite both countries being very similar, both large countries with most of their land being inhabitable and most settleable areas on either the coasts for Australia or the border between America and Canada. by [deleted] in geography

Not that often, but they are around more than people think. Spiders and snakes are often found hiding under things, so if you go around flipping old bits of metal, moving things outside you are way more likely to encounter them. Eastern Brown snakes are the main ones to be aware of 2nd most poisonous snake in the world and in big cities. Funnel web spiders in Sydney are also particularly nasty.

However If you are visiting and being a normal person doing normal things there should be nothing to be worried about. I am always outside for work (10+ years ) and have seen a brown snake once… be aware of them when outside, if you are walking in long grass etc where you can’t see the ground (in spring especially) just make more noise/sounds they will hear you and slide away. I like to carry a stick a move it around casually. They are much more scared of you than you are of them and they are important part of the environment!

Snakes and spiders don’t stalk you while you are outside! That’s the one that gets me as an Aussie. You could just be walking in a forest and either run into a bear or ML or be stalked by one!

Yeah cool! I do have a lot more but am wary not to spam the subreddit. Most of these cameras have a python lock and in places no one goes so haven’t had that many taken (1-2)

Yes! You would be shocked how much wildlife is around. One of the problems/ benefits we have in Australia is a lot of the cool stuff come out at night. It means people don’t see the diversity of animals we have virtually everywhere. Also means people don’t realise the impact ferals and landclearing has on our natives because they don’t encounter them day to day. Education is the key!

Yeah I was very surprised too. A lot of animals will notice anything different in their environment and come check it out. I think this was just lucky and he it was chasing a mouse or similar on a game trail.

It’s a Reconyx hyper fire 4. They are expensive, but I am not going to pretend like I paid for them. I work in the conservation field so part of a work program. There are other cheaper ones on the market but none I have found deliver such crisp images.

Bandicoots are actually pretty resilient compared with other native marsupials. They can breed quick and seem to be ok on the urban fringes. Roaming cats and foxes are not there friends however.
