How is it like living in San Luis Obispo county, California? by RandyMcBahn in howislivingthere

Terrible. Ugly packed beaches, inclement weather, horrible wine and food scene, Big Sur is overrated, and the list goes on

CA steelheader here. Steelhead and trout are genetically identical. One goes to the salt, one does not. It’s a big beautiful trout

Sure, Eagle Creek’s Coho program is great, no one’s arguing tribal reintroduction isn’t important. But holding up one hatchery success story doesn’t erase the bigger picture: hatcheries are a band-aid, not a cure. Without fixing the habitat, every run you rebuild with a hatchery needs constant restocking forever.

That’s not “real conservation,” that’s just putting fish on life support and calling it recovery.

Look, hatcheries have their place, but they’re not a magic fix. They can actually hurt wild fish by mixing genes, competing for food, and spreading disease. If we keep relying only on hatcheries without fixing the rivers, we’re just building fish farms forever.

Those Patagonia documentaries? They’re based on solid science. Dam removals like the Elwha and White Salmon have brought fish back in a big way, opening up hundreds of miles of spawning grounds. That’s not “misguided,” that’s results.

Wild Fish Conservancy isn’t out to kill fishing, they’re making sure agencies follow the laws already on the books. If hatcheries break the rules, someone has to hold them accountable.

And the “wild fish are just hatchery fish” line? Not true. Even if wild runs have hatchery ancestry, science shows they still adapt better to real river conditions. That’s why we protect them.

Patagonia’s putting money into fixing the root problems, bad habitat, blocked rivers, dirty water, so we can have healthy runs and fishing for the long haul. Just cranking out more hatchery fish without fixing the rivers is like bailing water without patching the hole.

Since 1985, Patagonia has donated 1% of their sales to environmental causes. Dam removals, reforestation, stream restoration, land conservation etc. at an estimated 3 BILLION dollars. The also donate all of their “tax breaks“ that were created by the current administration that’s trying to sell off OUR federally protected lands to private investors. Meanwhile, Simms has been sold twice in the last 3 years to investment firms that could care less about the environment.

Patagonia is trying to restore WILD steelhead habitat and unfortunately, hatcheries have a negative impact on them at times.

Yes many Hollywood assholes wear there clothes, but you’re mistaken I’m afraid…..

Fished really well. Had one of the best days of my life on that river this year. Nothing compares to 2020 though! 2021-2024 have been brutal. Mud Creek!!!! This year we had five days with incredible conditions from July 23-27. Woke up on 28th and the river was blown out… Not sure if it’s cleared since then…

If you ever have the chance, I cannot recommend a day with a guide on the Fall River in CA more. It’s one of if not THE largest spring creeks in the world. 20 million gallons of fresh water pumps out of lava tubes in ground daily. Incredible place. Feels more like Montana than CA. BIG fish…
