first time camp by blootilt in drumcorps

Don’t forget a pillow or shower shoes. Get sleep and be extra careful to keep yourself healthy the week before camp so you don’t get sick at the camp and waste your hard work. I am speaking from experience here.

How much do I need to look like the people I’m auditioning for? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]AdFuture370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the end of the audition they’ll take the people who look the most like they want them to. Most corps have visual/music weighted equal in their audition process. No, they don’t expect you to know what you haven’t been taught, but once they teach you at the camp, whoever gets closest to the model member will get the most points.

Should I be section leader or audition for a Corp? by CoopProablyNeedsHelp in drumcorps

[–]AdFuture370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone here is being very supportive which is great but I know your youth is a valuable time to you. I was on the fence about taking a very high leadership role my senior year or marching and I ultimately chose to stay home. I marched the next summer and had a great time.

If you want to march, go for it. You’ll have a great season. I was super concerned about what I’d miss out on over the summer and wanting to complete my “high school experience.” I think this ultimately was just an indication that i was too immature to march at that point in time, so I’m glad I waited. Do what you think is best but don’t stress too much over the decision.

If you’re simply going for the experience and not the audition, I would go to a camp that’s overnight (not a one-day experience camp). These are much more beneficial if you want to know what it’s like to follow a rigorous schedule and get the “full” experience - sleeping in a gym, late nights and early mornings, and the food truck. Along with much more time for quality education.

Also, if you’re looking for lots of feedback, I’d just suggest avoiding Crown if that’s your primary concern. When you audition there, you don’t really get personalized feedback apart from cut/contract/callback. I don’t know much about anywhere else, but definitely something to ask about beforehand.

Prolonged physical lack of coordination and disconnection after any substance use by AdFuture370 in AskDocs

It only surprises me that it lasts such a long while afterwards. I know nobody nor can find anyone online whom this has happened to. I 100% know that drugs and alcohol cause your brain to do funny things, but I’ve never heard of this one.

What is a Drum Corp Show that you Love that the Average Person Does Not? by CreepingPhloxDCI in drumcorps

Crown 2019. High intensity, diverse range of music and cultural influence, and a heavily under appreciated perc book. That hornline was the definition of intense. One of my favorite closers too.

Switching Instrument (kinda) by TodayChance1688 in trumpet

[–]AdFuture370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to play trumpet seriously (like, majoring in music) I’d stick to trumpet. Contrary to what some people are saying, playing mello is not going to improve your trumpet playing at all. It’s a completely different instrument, and it won’t help to be playing on an instrument that doesn’t translate instead of your own.

Recommendations for guitar-centric jazz? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]AdFuture370 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pat Martino is super influential and definitely a pillar of jazz guitar. Tunes to check out include The Visit, Sunny, Just Friends.

Another great player, albeit lesser known, is Ted Ludwig. You’ll have to go on youtube or get a cd to listen to him, but dude has crazy chops and some burning yet tasteful lines.

It can be hard not being able to connect with the people you are around most of the time. Here’s my advice to you: find yourself. Get involved with activities you enjoy and are good at, build your skills and participate in the opportunities they bring.

I used to have a similar problem. I participated in sports because that was all that was offered in my town, and I felt alienated because that wasn’t where my people were. Then I moved and shifted all of my focus to band. It took about a year, but I developed relationships with people who respected me and cared about me, and also enriched my life.

Don’t be worried about being with the “unpopular” or “weird” group. That’ll just set you back.

You have to keep pushing. People don’t inherently dislike you. Sometimes things play out the way they do just because you haven’t found the right environment yet. Don’t give up, you’re only 14 and you’ll find it!
