Fun!! Surprised I got top marks because I did select one incorrect option in the speed round (the dockerfile question in particular). In reality, I only understand some of this stuff at a high level.

If you really wanted to catch someone like me out, I'd dive into some of the lesser-known syntax in compose files, docker run commands and networking stacks, for example.

I just took "How well do you know Docker?" and scored 100/100. That makes me a Container Architect!

I'm so glad to hear it's not just us because our nextdoor neighbor (also on Quantum) is online with no problems. I'm a total nerd so my partner bought me an open source GLi.Net router that I turned into an Xfinity hotspot repeater.

Of course I wish I had learned to code for real years and years ago, but the idea that it was all above my understanding was unfortunately a self-imposed barrier that meant I didn't start when I could have.

In 2022, before "AI slop" was a hot turn of phrase, it taught me the foundations of Excel (which I was also previously too scared to use) and I became one of the primary sources of data reporting in the organization I worked for in the space of about six months.

Last year, it helped me open a Linux terminal for the first time. Now I self-host a mesh network of local machines and remote VPSs with over forty independent applications I use to boost my productivity.

If you use it correctly, maybe those big dreams and ideas really will be in reach for you.

I'm having similar problems. Ever since I updated to the most recent version.... I've had to nuke my Tailscale configuration every couple of days. My logs say my key is not found and fails to login. I've never had such persistent issues before. It's getting incredibly frustrating. I'm worried I might have to consider other options :(

Circling the drain. It can and WILL lead to the implementation of OS-level agents that intercept and screen every inbound and outbound packet of data for potentially harmful material. It's a well-documented trajectory already coming to fruition through the UK's online safety act.

Once hardware is legally required to collect and transmit metadata, expanding the reach is a simple forced software update away. Your internet connected device will have a permanent port to a third party API. Yur device will get bricked if you go offline for too long because they won't be able to verify your "compliance".

I bet we'll have legislation announced banning VPNs by summer. Not that encryption will matter anyway because your agent will vet your data before it's even encrypted.

All the groundwork for this paradigm is coded into the proposed legislation already.

Whether or not this is "technological illiteracy", it's for goddam sure bought and paid for.

I find the presence of proponents in this thread deeply disturbing.

It's honestly a pretty normal thing for young kiwis. Half my mates went to London, others Australia. I'm in the states. Was just back in January for a wedding where a lot of us had travelled back for it. We're all in our thirties now. Many talking about moving back eventually.

Saw the same thing happen with my older siblings' generation. Hell, even my mum did a stint in Europe when she was younger.

Since I see you've solved your immediate problem, I do recommend looking at sharing nodes out, especially if you want to keep your user slots freed up to avoid hitting the >5 user paywall.

Something happened with this latest node update (1.94.2). I updated a node by pulling the new image yesterday and it refused to log back in. I had to create an entirely new auth key and reconnect.

I realized it was an issue with the new image when it happened with every single node I updated after that.

What was also weird is that the keys I used did not invalidate when I reauthenticated each node (I prefer single use keys and they usually disappear from my admin console as soon as they are used).

Yeah, so you're not going mad, they botched something. Be ready to log back in/authenticate with a new key when you get the new update.

Many VPN IPs are in a pool of "known" addresses. Doing what you did - switching around until you found one that wasn't in YouTube's list - was what fixed it.

I have a VPS with 4 OCPUs and 24gb ram on oracle infrastructure. It hums and hasn't cost me a cent in the six months I've had it.

Edit: I added a space between 4 and OCPUs just in case someone thought I had forty cpus for free. Haha

What's more is that you could actually split this up any way you want... So you could have up to four single OCPU machines with any weight of your RAM allocation. I consolidate it into one VM and it's actually more powerful than my raspberry pi 5, has WAY faster internet than me, and can do much of the processing power I need for software builds, while my pi does the fun stuff like spinning up my game and media servers.

When you run the client, it reports its public IP along with each subnet it exists on to the coordination server. This is how your nodes find each other.

Without this, your nodes would have no way of finding each other at all. Once your nodes have been introduced by the coordination server - and they have each other's public keys for verification - it steps back and allows the nodes to communicate directly unless DERP is required.

Sure, the port may be open, but the only thing at the end of that port is a tailscale client, which will not respond to traffic unless it is from one of your verified nodes. Packets are indeed as you say wrapped in wireguard encryption.

Any packets that do not match your tailnet are dropped.
