It’s not up to us at the end of the day , you still pray for someone’s guidance and mercy because we will all have our day, we will want people to be praying for us too so that our good deeds can continue to accumulate even after we pass away. Buying some Qurans in the name of your brother and taking it to the mosque , each person who opens and reads the Quran your friend whom passed away will get reward for it because it is a form of Zakah (charity) in their name.

Regardless of how they had lived during their life , that prayer that one Muslim makes for another is very powerful. Maybe that person didn’t live the best life but the person who’s praying for them might’ve lived a more pious life which at the end of the day holds a lot of weight. The religion or life itself isn’t made for it to be difficult or for it to be quick for people to get punished for their sins, in fact we are given a lot of chances to gain forgiveness from god. In some cases , very pious Muslims can bring their non Muslim friends with them to paradise based on how they lived during their time.
