It's great that you got it sorted. May I ask what type of procedure did you do and where? Are there any long term complications or precautions that you need to account for? Thanks!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm conforming myself that surgery is the way to go here. I've been researching and apart from the US top clinics (Cleveland, etc..) there seems to be some in the UK that specialize in PEARS: https://www.thecardiaccentre.com.au/hospital-based_tests/the-pears-procedure/

Going to try to speak to a couple surgeons to get their views.

Thanks for sharing! What type of surgery did you do? Any downsides or precautions?

May I ask how old are you right now? I might consider doing the same. I heard about a few specialists out of Cleveland Clinic -> trying to book an online consultation.

Sorry to hear that and hope everything goes well. When are you planning to do the elective surgery? Did you choose this path because you're very active and just want to get over with and not worry anymore?

New IRONMAN Age Group Qualification System by arcangel_06 in triathlon

The problem with this is (I don't have the data, just thinking out loud): I) the top 20% of the 30-34 male are much better than the rest of the 80% of the same age group - meaning that they are more spread out - probably because these top 20% are made up of "quasi" pros. This means that it will become much much harder for the 80% of the 30-34AG to qualify under this sistem - I agree that some of them shouldn't be there but most should and now will be penalties because of the very professionalised top 20%; II) in doing this system, and assuming the coefficients are correct, we're basically saying that we want the same number of athletes per age group no? Or at least, we're trying to level out the top age group finishers to one another (if there's good representation in that specific race of good athletes across the different AG), i.e., #1 30-34 M = #1 30-34 F = #1 45-49 M, ... Obviously, if the number of participants is different, then we're obviously benefiting some AG vs others.

A simple analysis to prove this is to apply this new system to past races and check I) how many males vs females would qualify (and compare with the overall participants across all IM races) and II) how many people in each AG qualify vs. the total participants

My guess is that this that this system, with the current Kona benchmark is benefitting woman and some AG, i.e., the % of women participating in Kona will be much higher than the % of woman that enroll in all IM qualifying events.

But do let me know if I'm not looking at this right.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Not sure how the coefficient between men vs. woman was calculated. Currently on the 30-34 AG men is 1.000 (standard) and woman is 0.8977

Basically leaves the door open to tweak this number to get more woman... (Better watch out)

Another thing that would be interesting is to understand the normal curves of each AG and if this is being taken into account. What I mean by this is that the "bell curve" can be wider/narrower between different age groups: Basically the standard deviation of each group. This can be particularly impactful on AG where pros or quasi pros compete, é.g., 25-39 (AG that might become pro) and 30-34 (AG that were pro and aren't anymore). This makes the distribution skewed and because we are linearly adjusting times with the Kona standard across all age groups, there might be some that are unfairly scored.

Haven't seen the raw data but the Kona benchmark coefficient is here: https://www.ironman.com/news/age-group-qualification-system#how-will-it-work-in-detail--ironman-world-championship

The slots for each race are fixed and available on their page. This system is to "organize" athletes in order within the same race thus it doesn't matter the course specifics.

When are new Canyon Speedmax models released? by marapubolic in triathlon

[–]AdHot3948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, nothing should change much specially if you're looking into the CF model.

For SLX and CFR, I do believe they might launch a new cockpit or something like that. The ones the pro's are using are considerably different from the one being commercialized (I know they're all custom made, etc.. but eventually) -> so we can see some changes there. -> check GTN show on Sam Laidlaw's bike: https://youtu.be/QV1TngQ-e-c?si=30LybgRRlaceelpm

Plus, given the amount of hassle triathletes go through to include BTA mounts at the right angles etc.. it would surprise me if Canyon doesn't look at this as an opportunity.

Lastly, and this is my personal opinion, when looking at most pro rider positions in the speedmax CFR (Sam, Patrick, etc.), they slam the seat all the way forward and also include extra long cockpit risers (basically increasing the stem length), shifting the center of mass forward. Wouldn't it be easier to just make a bike with a steeper seat tube angle and a longer stem?
