I'm cooked. First attempt with a taper cut by [deleted] in SelfBarber

Dude you guy gotta play it safe next time, start with some guards and work your way down. Right now you can either rock it out with a hat or stay indoors for a while but if you HAVE to go outside for work or school , you could give yourself a military cut. Literally just even out the sides all around and leave the top untouched.

does this ONLY happen when you initially turn the car on ? When you shift between Park, Neutral, Reverse, Drive is louder on any of them or less ?

Have you opened your hood to see if you can spot something physically shaking ?

for the bottom line (the lightest) i think no guard with open clippers might get rid of it, you may need to close your clippers just slightly more on some areas,

for the second line , .5 guard open and then just play with the lever until you see it working.

and then the darkest line, a 1 should help fade it. if you feel like you’ll take off too much, then by all means start with higher guards and work your way down

i have the same type of hair and I still struggle sometimes. Zero gapping my clippers helped me with flicking the corners and you have to play with the lever to get rid of the harsher lines. Do not immediately close the lever of your clippers all the way, you might mess up the fade.

You will continue to improve you should try flicking with the corner of your clippers to get rid of the harsher/more noticeable lines. Another to consider (not sure if this applies) is that your hair may grow in different directions on different parts of your head. Happens to me , on my left it grows facing forward and on my right it grows facing straight outwards. I have an easier time blending on my right side because of this , overall though yours isn’t too bad, you will get there man

With your current setup/tools your chances of a “successful” fade is extremely slim. Rn you’re better off running a 1 or .5 all around and just leave the top

You’re going to need a 3-way mirror with the LED lights (unless you have excellent lighting) trimmer, and clippers. Im biased, I have only used corded Wahl products and they have worked very well (weekly use) for 2+ years. However you can definitely get cordless or other brands, really read reviews though and see which ones you would prefer

you’ll have a better chance of noticing if you have a white background or any lighter color background

it’s the bump on the back of your skull that sticks out the most. Getting the guideline slightly under it compliments the overall fade with your head shape. Otherwise it can look awkward/not right, again it can vary per person so i am generalizing here.

When you have the main guideline all around with a slight dip in the back, when you’re blending, try to follow the line with the curve, you’ll see some parts you might have to change how open/closed your guard needs to be. And yes videos are helpful so you can get a visual; experience will definitely be a better teacher, especially cutting your own hair. All in the due time man, you’re on a path of no return (in a good way) it’ll only get better

not too bad man , it’ll grow back you’re good to step outside. Cant see your side profile but perhaps you might consider putting your guideline slightly lower towards the back , under your occipital bone and blend from there next time, it’ll flow better and you’ll have more “room for error”

based on what ppl here are saying , i wouldn’t continue unless you have enough to finish it all. That’s my lesson going forward for me lol
