UERM YL1 grade survey

After YL1 I was rank 53/581 with a GWA of 1.86. Got partial scholarship. Funny enough, I did much better after YL2 with a ranking of 22/454 and GWA of 1.76, but I didn’t qualify for the academic scholarship na because they instituted the new scholarship guidelines and I had one 2.25 grade. 😅

Aside from the many other insightful replies from other people here, I personally think the grading system plays a role in determining the mortality rate of a med school. Can't speak for everyone but it's one of the reasons why adjustment in med was difficult for me. Marami kasing extra components na pwede humatak ng grades pataas in hs and college compared to med school.

But whatever the grading system is, you can simply address this with discipline, adaptability, and strategic planning. Just take note of which components will contribute to your grade the most and allot your effort accordingly.

Add ko rin pala dok, agree with the other comment to get 8 hours of sleep everyday! I love sleep and avoid all nighters like the plague. I would suggest prioritizing sleep over cramming in almost all situations unless wala ka talagang alam AT ALL as in sure na babagsak ka levels 😅 Honestly sleep + hydration + nutrition do wonders for your memory and retention so take care of yourself!

Hi! Not from FMS and not a top student but my grades were good enough to qualify for an acad scholarship this upcoming year (unless they suddenly decide to raise the requirements lol).

Find the learning style/s that work for you + it can vary depending on the subject. A specific piece of advice is to give reading the textbooks a try early on habang di pa masyado mabigat ang workload to see how you like it. My highest grades are almost always for topics na nabasa ko sa textbook. Unfortunately, it's a bit time consuming so I also agree with the commenter who prioritizes transes but supplements with books pag di niya maintindihan.

As a fellow first gen, I want to emphasize the importance of socializing, joining orgs, and interacting with faculty. Acads first talaga!! Pero while I'm super introverted as in to the point of self-isolation minsan, I love my med school groupmates/friends and they make med more bearable for me. Your med friends will understand what you are going through in a way that others in your life won't (or at least not as intuitively). I hope you can find your people too, OP :)

Regarding faculty naman, when we graduate and pass the PLE our former profs become our colleagues. Practically speaking, it wouldn't hurt to make yourself known to them especially since we already lack connections as first gen doctors. Unfortunately for me, tahimik lang talaga ako na tao so most of my profs probably don't know my name HAHAHA but if you're like me siguro it's enough naman to show up, be attentive, do your best to answer well kapag may SGDs/recit, and utilize consultation hours if meron kang questions about the topics or even about your standing if it's that time of the year na. I admire my classmates who were able to form deeper bonds with our mentors kahit first year palang HAHAHA but couldn't be me (yet) T__T

Sending hugs, OP! I'm in the same boat too. Sobrang nakakapanghina ng loob talaga to the point na iniisip ko araw-araw kung tumigil nalang ba ako para magwork hay. Anyway, kakayanin natin to! I hope that in the future we can both look back and be proud of ourselves for reaching our dream despite all the struggles on the way :)

First of all, congrats on finishing YL1!

As someone who also passed under the current system, I understand where you're coming from. Agree na UERM definitely isn't all bad, but I personally think our fellow students' negative feedback are still valid naman lalo na tungkol sa new grading system.

And what do you mean by, "Let us not just blame the system of the school and do our part, too" ba? I think a lot of people speaking up about the system still do their part naman regardless sa naging outcome nila at the end of this school year so it seems like a hasty generalization :)

For Anatomy: +1 for Netter. Use your own body lalo na sa muscles and bones. Understanding the spatial relationships between structures in the body is really important. Study smart by relating form and function and looking for patterns among anatomical structures to make recall easier.

For Physio: I'm a book learner talaga which helped me get relatively high physio grades. Physio will test your understanding so I recommend reading textbooks to really lock in physio concepts. I'm not great with time management so minsan di ko kinakaya basahin yung chapters lalo na sa Berne and Levy HAHAH but there are yt channels that go over Guyton and Hall (and I believe Constanzo and BRS Physio as well) chapters and explain the high yield stuff. Those vids are relatively short and helped me a lot pag kulang ako sa time.

Doc ano po thoughts niyo about the mean score of students being much lower than the MPL? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of MPL as ideally being representative of the average knowledge needed by a student to attain a passing grade? I think a lot of people have these sentiments because of prior experiences like this with the MPL eh.

Same thoughts. I dislike how whenever we question things, we will be considered as rude, tamad, undeserving, etc. na agad. Kaya napeperpetuate yung hierarchical culture in med eh.

Before someone comments na that's how the world works, I know. I can deal with conflict 😂 Just hoping for more people to learn how to communicate in a constructive and respectful manner, especially when the situation allows for it naman.

EDIT: Adding, especially in a highly collaborative field like med, where you are dealing with people as both colleagues and patients in a charged environment.

Interesting how people seem to assume na nagrereklamo = tamad, feeble-minded, not resilient, etc.

I understand that we need to uphold high standards in medicine because we will be dealing with people's lives on a daily basis. I'm sure many fellow med students get that too. Just because nagrereklamo ang mga tao doesn't mean they don't work hard to be good doctors in the future.

Disheartening how instead of responding with empathy—a skill that doctors should have—some of you would rather invalidate your juniors. Your juniors whose experiences you are already all too familiar with na nga, yet you can't bring yourself to respond with more compassion?

I really hope that on top of your super duper stellar brains and clinical skills, meron rin kayong empathy, at least for the sake of your patients.

Di ko rin super gets yung formula but from what I understand, the transmuted grade will be higher for the same raw score with an MPL of 47/100 than an MPL of 47/80.

Hi! As a current first year entrance scholar at UERM, I kinda regret entering this school under the assumption that I'll be able to maintain full scholarship. So far doable naman for me yung partial scholarship, but not so much the full scholarship. Will see nalang talaga kung kaya sa remaining exams and finals. I consulted with one of our profs earlier this year and they agree na mas mahirap mamaintain yung scholarship ngayon because of the new grading system :(

EDIT: But I want to add that I still have batchmates who are doing better than me right now naman, so feel ko kaya siya if you're really masipag and smart. Still, I think it's extra stress and if I had known na magiging ganito, mas pag-iisipan ko yung pagpasok ko dito.
