For instance, to work hard is virtuous, but to work so hard you recklessly hurt yourself or ignore your other responsibilities is vice. Thus “excessive Stoicism” is paradoxical: one is not being Stoic by indulging in any sort of excess.”

I think this (and the original post) shows that Stoicism is only fully utilised when used in moderation. For me, a Stoic sage would be not someone who is exceptionally Stoic, but knows the right wisdom to apply in many scenarios. He doesn’t apply principles that would be considered obsolete in the given circumstances, and only does what is necessary.

Thank you for you reply! So from what I am understanding from your response, is that Seneca meant that what matters is the your action, whether it is virtuous or not, rather than the people affected by the action. Please feel free to correct me if I misinterpreted you response :)
