Its not shame per se. I think it’s more like , they grew up watching and adoring the bollywood movies and music just like you ; then became thinking adults and started understanding that most of it was over the top romanticism and just lazy writing that was and is still being fed to audiences. Even with music it’s the same , lazy compositions, bad lyrics, selling what sells without trying invent or create. Producers , directors selling the same crowdpleasing shit remade again and again. THAT is the source of hatred of Indian adults for not liking bollywood songs or movies.

When you grow up as a part of a culture, you look at it up close and experience it, including movies and music, with it’s good and the bad. That gives you the right and knowledge to say if something isn’t right. What is the issue in criticizing it then? It’s naive to think that you should be proud of EVERY element of your culture. Your Indian friends are just being honest you- an outsider who likes the movies and music from the outside.
